Sterile Processing Technician – Full Time

Overview

The certified Sterile Processing Technician within the SPD performs all tasks associated with the processing of surgical instruments and medical devices, including cleaning, decontamination, assembly, sterilization/high‑level disinfection, monitoring environmental conditions, and inventory management.

Responsibilities
  • Assists in processing of instruments, surgical trays, and surgical case carts; maintains knowledge of instruments and trays and can assemble trays and sets as detailed on set layout sheets; operates all machinery associated with the decontamination and processing area and identifies problems that affect the quality of the product produced.
  • Checks expiration dates on sterile items and takes appropriate action if outdated items are found.
  • Demonstrates proper phone etiquette and uses proper procedures with callers on the business unit and OR Hotline phones in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Performs daily soil rounds of the medical units, visiting required areas and returning items to SPD for processing.
  • Performs functions in the decontamination area, cleaning instruments, trays, and carts, and controls workflow without direction.
  • Records all processed loads accurately and enters information into record books required to track processed loads; records biological indicators into required logs, places indicators into the proper incubator, and removes them after the proper time period while recording the outcome of testing.
  • Manages SPD department stock, puts away supplies, and rotates stock as needed with reasonable speed and accuracy.
  • Operates in the supervisor’s or coordinator’s absence, takes charge of the business unit, and assigns team members as required to ensure patient care.
  • Operates steam and Sterrad sterilization equipment in compliance with manufacturer instructions and infection‑prevention policies.
  • Lifts a minimum of 30 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs., and stands for the length of the shift.
  • Performs other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with STERRAD sterilization.
Licenses and Certifications Required
  • National certification: Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPDT).
Working Conditions

Lifts a minimum of 30 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs., and stands for the length of the shift.

Compensation

Minimum rate: $22.77 hourly. HMH is committed to pay equity and transparency. The posted rate is a reasonable good‑faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act. The base compensation may differ based on market data, experience, education, certifications, skills, location, equity, budget, and other non‑discriminatory factors.
