Job description
University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust
Staff Nurse

Closing date is 05 January 2026

This new innovation is born out of a vision to create a sustainable future for the urological specialist nursing team. It intends to take an expert urological nurse from a novice. The successful candidate will rotate within all aspects of urological nursing, embracing this rich learning opportunity, remaining responsible for the assessment of patient needs, development of programmes of care, and implementation and evaluation. To provide a high standard of clinical nursing within the ward/department, manage a group of patients, take charge of the ward department when rostered and assessed as competent, assume leadership and supervision responsibilities, act as a role model to students and Clinical Support Workers, and present a positive, professional image of the organisation and nursing team.

Complimentary to introductory responsibilities, the programme is designed so that a novice staff nurse can build on key nursing skills by following the foundations of urological specialist nursing and become an expert. The aim is to harness talent, build confidence and clinical capability aligned with academic achievements that will future‑proof advanced urological nursing.

Job Responsibilities
  • Communicate with patients and their relatives using a range of methods in a caring, sensitive, and empathetic manner.
  • Share sensitive information about patients with the health‑care team and, with patient consent, with relatives.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills when dealing with difficult situations.
  • Provide clear and concise patient handover to other team members.
  • Escalate concerns in a patient's condition to senior nursing team members and medical staff.
  • Initiate referrals to other members of the health‑care team.
  • Report ward and departmental affairs to the LUN/ACP Matron and Sister/Charge Nurse, and participate in meetings.
  • Ensure that patients' concerns are addressed through liaison with senior staff.
  • Remain connected and a valued member of the urological specialist nursing team.
  • Communicate in a professional manner with all patients and visitors to the ward/departments.
  • Promote equality and diversity, ensuring that individual needs of patients and families are recognised.
  • Take personal responsibility for ensuring accurate communication relating to patient discharge.
  • Participate in annual appraisals, with the first taking place within the first six months from appointment.
