Job description

We are recruiting an experienced Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist to join the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, working across Pinderfields General Hospital and Dewsbury General Hospital in Wakefield. This locum role is to cover maternity leave for approximately five months, with the option to extend for part‑time working arrangements.

You’ll play a vital role in delivering specialist dysphagia and communication assessments and interventions for adults within an inpatient acute hospital setting. This is a fully on‑site role, providing direct patient contact and collaborative work as part of a skilled multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of adults with communication and swallowing difficulties in acute inpatient settings.
  • Independently manage a complex caseload of dysphagia patients using evidence‑based practice.
  • Work closely with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to ensure safe and effective care planning and rehabilitation.
  • Contribute to discharge planning, training, and education of staff on communication and swallowing management.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and adhere to NHS and professional standards.

You will be a confident and autonomous Speech and Language Therapist with a strong background in acute inpatient settings. You will have proven experience managing complex dysphagia cases, strong clinical reasoning skills, and a collaborative approach to patient care within the MDT.

Qualifications
  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent qualification)
  • HCPC registration and RCSLT membership (essential)
  • Proven experience working in an adult acute hospital setting (essential)
  • Dysphagia trained, with ability to manage complex swallowing cases independently
  • Minimum of three years' NHS experience (desirable)
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to work flexibly across both hospital sites
