Qualifications

  • Experience supporting children with speech, language, and communication needs.
  • Confidence working with pupils with hearing impairments or willing to undertake training.
  • Proactive, patient, and able to adapt support to meet individual needs.
  • Good understanding of language development and communication strategies.
  • Hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willing to apply.

Speech and Language Teaching Assistant - Hearing Impaired Unit (Primary School in Rochdale)

Start Date: January 2026

Pay: £85-£100

Hours: Monday, Wednesday & Friday, 08:30 - 15:30

Contract: January 2026 until the end of the academic year

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Speech and Language Teaching Assistant to support pupils within a welcoming and well-resourced Hearing Impaired Unit in a primary school in Rochdale. This role is ideal for someone with experience or training in speech and language support who is passionate about helping children with hearing impairments develop their communication skills and confidence.

Responsibilities
  • Providing 1:1 and small-group speech and language support to pupils with hearing impairments
  • Assisting with implementing personalised communication plans and therapy programmes
  • Supporting pupils with speech production, expressive and receptive language, vocabulary development, and social communication
  • Using visual aids, signing systems (BSL/Makaton), and structured communication strategies where appropriate
  • Monitoring and recording pupil progress in line with therapy goals
  • Working collaboratively with teachers and support staff to create an inclusive communication-rich environment
  • Helping to prepare resources and maintain an organised, supportive learning space
  • Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils and their families
Qualifications
  • Have experience supporting children with speech, language, and communication needs
  • Be confident working with pupils with hearing impairments or be willing to undertake training
  • Be proactive, patient, and able to adapt support to meet individual needs
  • Have a good understanding of language development and communication strategies
  • Hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one)
Desirable (but not essential)
  • Experience working in a Hearing Impaired Unit or specialist SEND provision
  • Knowledge of BSL or Makaton
  • Experience delivering targeted interventions such as speech sound work, vocabulary development, or interaction groups
  • Relevant speech and language support training (ELKLAN)
