Job description
Overview

This is a career enhancing opportunity for an ambitious Speciality Doctor in Anaesthesia to join Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, based within the Anaesthesia team at Wythenshawe Hospital, with an option to undertake additional work at other sites depending on preference and development opportunities. The Department supports applications for consultant posts via the CESR route and aims to cover much of the 2010 Anaesthetic Curriculum. The post includes opportunities to develop specialist interests within anaesthesia, critical care, pain and perioperative medicine. Specific job plans will be arranged after discussion with Clinical Directors and Job Planning leads, and may include out-of-hours or weekend work.

The post holder may be required to work across the Trust site as part of the Managed Clinical Service of CSS.

Wythenshawe Anaesthetic Department

The department provides extensive accommodation including offices for medical staff, Acute Pain nurses and secretarial staff, a seminar room and a trainee’s common room with the Departmental Library. There are three separate on-call rotas: General on-call Consultants (1 in 10 with prospective cover, 2-tier rota); Acute ICU (1 in 15 with prospective cover); and Cardiac theatres/ICU (1 in 8 with prospective cover, 2-tier rota, including ECMO). A nurse-based pre-op service liaises with anaesthetists regarding high-risk patients, and there are five consultant-led high-risk pre-op clinics per week.

Trafford Hospital

Trafford Hospital hosts nine elective operating theatres, a four-bedded high-care facility and the Manchester Elective Orthopaedic Centre (MEOC). Elective orthopaedic surgery is primarily at the Manchester Orthopaedic Centre within Trafford General Hospital, offering ring-fenced elective orthopaedic facilities with four laminar flow theatres.
