Job description

We are seeking registered nurses to join our expanding team of Specialist Screening Practitioners (SSPs), within the Surrey Bowel Cancer Screening Team.

As a Specialist Screening Practitioner, you will:

  • Deliver patient clinics (primarily via telephone, with face-to-face consultations when clinically necessary).
  • Manage patients throughout their screening pathway.
  • Assess fitness for screening investigations.
  • Support informed decision-making and act as a patient advocate.
  • Provide support during endoscopy colonoscopy sessions and MDT meetings, including data collection.
  • Promote screening uptake and reduce health inequalities through outreach and collaboration.

The Surrey Bowel Cancer Screening Centre is based at Royal Surrey Foundation NHS Trust, Guildford, and also supports endoscopy sessions at:

  • Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (Frimley Park Hospital)
  • Ashford and St Peter's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (St Peter's Hospital).
  • Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (East Surrey Hospital)

As the role involves travel between these sites, a valid driving licence and access to a car are essential. Flexibility is required to ensure full service coverage, which may include occasional weekend shifts.

Main duties of the job

Candidate Requirements Essential:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) qualification.
  • Relevant experience in patient assessment and/or endoscopy.
  • Ability to manage a target-driven clinical caseload independently.
  • Strong communication and advocacy skills.
  • Confidence working within an evolving service and contributing to new developments.
  • IT skills, including working knowledge of Word and Excel.
  • Post-qualification in mentorship, teaching, or assessment.o Experience in managing colorectal disease.
  • Knowledge of the cancer patient pathway.
  • Advanced communication skills.Training & Developmento Significant in-house training provided.
  • Mandatory and fully funded Screening Training Module (40 credits at Level 6) at either Liverpool University or University of Plymouth.

To play a pivotal role in supporting the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) delivered by the Surrey Bowel Screening Centre, based in Guildford at Royal Surrey Foundation NHS Trust.

Job responsibilities

Work closely with the Lead SSP, SSPs, endoscopy team, colorectal team, pathology, radiology and the Multidisciplinary Colorectal Team in the Trust(s).

Collaborate working with the Programme Hub, NHS England, and Health Promotion colleagues to deliver the highest standard of care.

Co-ordinate and provide care for patients participating in the screening programme, including those on FIT, Lynch surveillance and surveillance pathways.

Act as a patient advocate supporting informed choices throughout the screening process.

Work collaboratively with the team to support health promotion activities to improve access to screening across all communities

Populate and maintain the local Bowel Screening Programme database.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Experienced Registered nurse with current NMC PIN Qualiications Educated to masters level/ degree level OR equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level/manager level/supervisor/ in specialist area.
  • Qualification in advanced communication skills
Knowledge
  • Extensive knowledge of specialist areas, acquired through post graduate diploma or equivalent experience. State the specific knowledge
  • Experience of assessing patients in a clinical area.
  • CPD - Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development
  • Must have an understanding of the background to and aims of current healthcare policy/national guidance/CQC/ and appreciate the implications of this on engagement
  • Relevant clinical experience and knowledge of Lower GI disease including endoscopic and radiological investigations
  • Understanding of surgical and oncological treatments
  • Understanding of the importance of informed consent
  • Clinical Governance and risk management
  • Working in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Ability to manage own caseload in accordance with Screening targets, NHS cancer targets and working across multiple sites.
  • Research and or audit experience
