Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a number of specialist optometrist posts to work at Moorfields City Road, St George's, and Ealing in a variety of core and subspeciality clinics throughout the week (Contact Lenses, Medical Retina Injection clinics, Glaucoma, Paediatrics, cataract).

Moorfields Eye Hospital is a post-graduate teaching Hospital of international acclaim, dedicated to excellence in patient care, training and research. Our main site is at City Road, London but we have a large, and growing, number of interdisciplinary satellite clinics at which optometric services are provided.

The Optometry Department has expanded rapidly with increasing extended role activities across Moorfields\' sites. The Optometry Department has over 160 optometrists and provides clinical services for refraction, low vision assessment, medical contact lenses as well as extended role.

We play a significant role in the training of ophthalmic professionals and in collaboration with UCL our optometry education has recently expanded to provide College of Optometrists Higher Qualifications. Our research priorities reflect the developing role of optometrists and our close links with the Institute of Ophthalmology. We are supported by our spectacle and contact lens laboratories.

We have a range of specialities, hours and terms of service. All can be discussed at interview stage.

Main duties of the job

To undertake specialist clinical activity; this activity requires regular use of a range of advanced clinical techniques requiring dexterity and concentration. These clinics involve responsibility for clinical decision-making with support from consultants and the provision of specialised diagnosis, management, care and education of patients.

To provide a clinical opinion or obtain a clinical opinion from consultant colleagues to optometric and non-optometric colleagues on the management of patients.

Job responsibilities

To provide a wide range of optometric services, including:

  • Working in an extended role capacity in a variety of ophthalmology clinics which can include Medical Retina, Glaucoma, Cataract or External Disease.
  • Working in extended role outside ophthalmology clinics, i.e. without medical support in clinic, e.g. Children\'s Vision Clinic. Refraction, including adult and paediatric; diagnostic and post-operative cases, Medical Contact Lenses, Low Vision Clinics, adult and paediatric.
  • Refracting patients to specific protocols as part of studies.
  • Supervising junior staff in their clinical roles.

Experience

  • Essential: Post-qualification Hospital experience >3 years
  • Essential: Experience of examining vulnerable groups of patients e.g. CYP / additional needs

Desirable

  • Hospital extended role experience
  • Community shared care experience
  • Experience with clinical teaching
  • Experience in audit/research
  • Experience of dealing with quality and safety issues e.g. complaints, incidents, risk assessment

Knowledge & Skills

  • Essential: Competent use of a slit-lamp to examine the anterior and posterior eye with specialist lenses
  • Essential: Audit; Competent performance of retinoscopy
  • Essential: Teaching; Ability to analyse and interpret ocular imaging e.g. OCT, visual fields, topography to an advanced clinical level
  • Essential: Ability to use Electronic patient record systems
  • Essential: Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Excellent written communication skills including the ability to write clinical summaries, referral letters, reports, papers
  • Ability to identify service improvement needs
  • Ability to sensitively communicate complex information in a range of situations
