Specialist Dietitian, Nutrition Team

Are you a Dietitian with experience in nutrition support? Are you interested in developing your knowledge, skills, experience and confidence supporting patients with intestinal failure?

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced dietitian to join the trust multi-disciplinary nutrition team as a Specialist Dietitian – Nutrition Team to support the clinical care of patients with intestinal failure. The role involves contributing to our daily MDT ward rounds, our weekly intestinal failure MDT meeting, and following up of patients post‑discharge. You will also be expected to be involved in student training and preceptorship.

We are a proactive, experienced dietetic team. You will be offered training and will have access to senior dietitian support in the management of the dietetic caseload. We are also able to offer you the opportunity to develop additional clinical skills such as indirect calorimetry and bioelectrical impedance measurement, and to be involved in the delivery of dietetic‑led research.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

With appropriate training and ongoing support, the main duties of the job include:

  • Carry out dietetic / nutritional assessments (including interpretation of biochemistry, anthropometrics, clinical condition and diet history) to determine nutritional diagnosis
  • Use enhanced clinical reasoning skills to provide specialist individual dietetic advice and treatment plans for patients who may present with multiple / complex clinical conditions taking into consideration patient’s own goals and incorporate discharge planning as appropriate
  • Evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment plans as required
  • Communicate nutrition and dietetic information in an understandable form to staff, clients and carers using teaching, motivation and counselling skills including situations where there are barriers to change
  • Undertake department audit and service development work, translating findings into practice
  • Plan and organise the clinical supervision of student dietitians on clinical placement including planning, timetables and written assessments
  • Support teaching / nutrition education of peers and multi professional colleagues
  • Engage in department and own CPD activities
  • Cover the work of colleagues and deputise for senior colleagues during periods of absence or peak workloads
  • Participate in health promotion activities of the department
  • Participate in other duties as required
Job responsibilities

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire is a designated Severe Intestinal Failure integrated centre, and this role will be an integral part of our Nutrition team MDT offering fantastic opportunities for development of knowledge and skills in a thriving nutrition service.

You will be an enthusiastic and dynamic Dietitian with NHS experience who wishes to develop your clinical skills in intestinal failure. You will work with the supervision and support of the team senior dietitians to provide dietetic expertise for patients with intestinal failure. You will be a core member of the well‑established nutrition team, alongside medical, nursing and pharmacy colleagues, taking part in inpatient ward rounds and outpatient telephone clinics. You will be trained and supported in this role by the senior dietitians for the service.

  • To carry out dietetic assessment appropriate to role and experience, provide nutritional diagnosis and provide a dietetic treatment plan for patients / clients.
  • To hold responsibility for own patient caseload including patients with complex presentations.
  • Maintain clinical records in line with local / Trust documentation guidelines.
  • To liaise with dietetic colleagues and other members of the multidisciplinary team as necessary (e.g., Medical, nursing, catering and other health care professionals).
  • To work within National and Trust policies / guidelines; and HCPC and BDA standards and codes of conduct.
  • To have a solid understanding of national and local standards and be able to monitor own practice against these.
  • To participate in bank holiday working and work flexible hours to meet the needs of the patients if required.
