Job description
Job Summary

Qualified Dental Nurse (GDC registered) required for the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontic team at University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM). The role involves providing safe, high‑quality patient care across both UHNM sites with a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration and complex treatment support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide compassionate patient care, including pre‑ and post‑operative verbal advice.
  • Monitor patients throughout appointments, respond to medical emergencies, and maintain accurate patient records.
  • Assist and support clinicians in complex Orthodontic, Oral Medicine, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and multidisciplinary clinics.
  • Prepare, handle, transfer, dismantle and re‑assemble all dental instruments and equipment; prepare surgical kits and instrument setups for procedures.
  • Maintain clinic setting, supplies and equipment, ensuring efficient use and ongoing safety checks.
  • Plan and organise own clinic activities, joint appointments, and liaise with other departments and hospitals.
  • Use intra‑oral scanning, impression taking, clinical photography and trust IT systems competently and safely.
  • Report departmental issues, participate in staff meetings, record minutes, and disseminate information to relevant staff.
  • Communicate effectively with all staff grades and with patients who may have language or communication barriers, coordinating with translation services where required.
  • Act as a resource to other teams, providing education, advice and training in specialised areas.
  • Maintain professional development, comply with statutory and mandatory training, and keep abreast of clinical advances.
  • Support policy and service development by contributing to policy reviews, risk management, infection control, and safety protocols.
Key Qualifications & Skills
  • National Certificate in Dental Nursing or equivalent NVQ3, and current registration with the GDC.
  • Competent in intra‑oral scanning, impression taking and clinical photography.
  • Proficient in Trust IT and IM&T systems.
  • Strong analytical, judgmental, planning, organisational and physical skills suitable for complex dental care.
  • Committed to continuous professional development and compliance with statutory training requirements.
