Job description

The School Nursing Team deliver health care to children with complex health needs aged 3–19 attending Sherwood Park School. They are responsible for undertaking health assessments, completing and updating care plans, managing emergency situations and providing training for educational staff. The post holder will ensure that high‑quality nursing care is delivered across two campuses.

The post holder will work collaboratively with other professionals involved in the care of children, including Children’s Therapists, Educational Staff, School Nursing and Social Services to support and empower children, young people and their families, improve health and give every child the opportunity to develop their full potential.

All practice must comply with current NMC guidance, organisational policies and service specifications. The post holder promotes and implements integrated working across health, education and social care to improve outcomes for children, young people and families. They act as a specialist practitioner, providing leadership, professional support and guidance to colleagues, leading by example and maintaining high standards of professional conduct, information governance and data security. Delegates appropriately to ensure safe, coordinated and effective care delivery.

Responsibilities (Band 6 School Nurse)
  • Deliver and oversee specialist clinical care, including medication administration, gastrostomy feeding and care for children with tracheostomies.
  • Assess, plan, implement and regularly review individual care plans, making onward referrals as required.
  • Support the lead clinician for the children’s continence service; conduct assessments, give advice on continence needs and issue appropriate products.
  • Represent the school nursing team in educational and multi‑agency settings, contributing to reviews, safeguarding processes and child‑protection meetings.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control policies and attend safeguarding supervision as required.
  • Ensure team compliance with commissioned service delivery and electronic record‑keeping requirements; maintain accurate and contemporaneous manual and electronic records in line with Sutton Health and Care policies and NMC Record Keeping Guidelines.
  • Ensure all complaints are listened to and issues identified are addressed appropriately.
  • Use reflective practice to ensure effective nursing care is delivered.
  • Report incidents and near‑misses promptly and appropriately.
  • Promote a professional image at all times and be accountable for own clinical practice.
  • Maintain child focus and ensure children’s privacy and dignity are upheld at all times.
Clinical Skills
  • Work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to meet the health needs of children and young people.
  • Carry out clinical care interventions daily for children with healthcare needs in the special school/ nursery setting.
  • Teach nursing and support staff as delegated by Senior Staff Nurses/Clinical Service Lead.
  • Promote the mental, physical and emotional health of children with physical and learning disabilities, liaising with parents/carers, teachers and the multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Contribute to and undertake health assessments, identify health needs, implement and evaluate programmes of care, refer as necessary to other professionals.
  • Work with parents and specialist teams to assist in the creation and delivery of care plans and risk assessments for pupils with complex health needs and long‑term conditions.
  • Follow Sutton Health and Care Services and PAN London Safeguarding Children’s Board procedures to safeguard children and provide reports to safeguarding meetings.
  • Identify risks when delivering care within the service, report them to the Senior Staff Nurses/Clinical Service Lead.
  • Contribute to the delivery and evaluation of the health promotion programmes within the school.
  • Support senior colleagues in planning and providing appropriate learning experiences for students. Act as a supervisor and mentor for student nurses on placement in the school.
  • Utilise research findings and evidence‑based practice to inform clinical decision‑making.
  • Participate in any clinical audit programmes and evaluate own practice within the clinical area.
