Job Summary

The post holder will play a key role in the delivery on cancer services throughout the Trust. To give advice and implement patient care in an area which requires specific clinical knowledge, skills, and experience. To work alongside other clinical colleagues to ensure quality of care to the patients is maximised.

The JD & PS are currently under AfC review and are subject to change.

Main duties of the job

The role of the Nurse Specialist in Cancer Care can be complex and varied, involving interventions and communication with multiple health care professionals across primary and secondary care and other private and charitable organisations. The Nurse specialist role improves the quality and experience of care for patients, reinforces patient safety, demonstrates leadership, and can increase productivity and efficiency (Macmillan 2013).

This post is part time. The working days required due to service demand are Tuesday - Friday 9-5pm. The occasional weekend or evening may be required. Cross site working is also required.

Job responsibilities – KEY DUTIES
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of evidence-based nursing care.
  • Provide specialist advice and clinical practice.
  • Provide specialist education and training to others including ward staff.
  • Work collaboratively to support clinical colleagues to develop services and high quality of care.
  • Support the Band 7/8 to lead the development of clinical services within the specialist field.
  • Triage referrals to Skin CNS team; manage an agreed patient caseload and order investigations per protocol with discussion with senior colleagues.
  • Identify, assess, and triage patients ensuring smooth transition to other services as appropriate.
  • Undertake procedures as required.
  • Undertake Holistic Needs Assessment and develop comprehensive care plans with measurable outcomes.
  • Ensure involvement of patients, carers and relatives in planning and delivery of care.
  • Act as a practitioner with supervision, exercising judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care.
  • Support compliance with regulations (e.g., Quality Surveillance Programme, drug administration, record keeping, data collection).
  • Adhere to nurse-led clinic protocols and evaluate outcomes and activity.
  • Support development of integrated care with primary and secondary care clinicians and other agencies.
  • Ensure services are in place to support management of conditions at home with MDT support as required.
  • Comply with NMC Code and Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice.
  • Develop and deliver Living with and beyond cancer patient support service and the Recovery package as per NHS England requirements.
  • Provide specialist telephone advice and assume a key worker role.
Clinical & Professional Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs and plan, implement and evaluate care delivery.
  • Perform clinical skills in assessment, diagnosis and/or treatment.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and involve patients and carers in planning and delivery of care.
  • Monitor investigation results and coordinate treatment pathways as required.
  • Work with other professionals to ensure discharge arrangements and effective communication across services.
  • Contribute to health promotion and attend supervision/meetings as required.
Administrative & Teaching Responsibilities
  • Administration supporting direct patient care and MDT preparation/follow up.
  • Dictating and signing letters; scheduling appointments; producing reports and presentations.
  • Participate in education of nursing, medical staff, AHPs, patients and carers; ensure mandatory training compliance.
  • Provide teaching and training to staff and patients as appropriate.
Line Management/Supervisory & Research
  • Provide specialist clinical knowledge to colleagues and patients; evaluate service delivery against targets and quality measures.
  • Ensure efficient use of resources; report activity data and contribute to service improvements.
  • Identify, undertake and disseminate research and audits; promote patient and public involvement and equality.
Qualifications & Requirements

Essential: NMC registration on Part 1; Speciality Related Course (ENB) or equivalent; Significant post-registration experience; Experience in cancer-related care; Willing to undertake Dermoscopy Training and Clinical Examination/Diagnostics.

Desirable: Degree or MSc; Additional communications training.

Knowledge & Skills: Essential includes knowledge of melanoma care, time management, NHS quality standards, IT skills, understanding Macmillan priorities; Desirable includes experience in clinical pathways, patient experience surveys, MDT working, line management.
