Qualifications

  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering and structural steelwork.

Overview

Job Title: Senior Structural Engineer

Location: Barrow-in-Furness — hybrid and flexible working arrangements available (speak to your recruiter about options).

What you’ll be doing
  • Analysis and design of complex steel structures utilising Eurocodes, British Standards and BAE standards to support submarine build.
  • Apply knowledge of regulations and requirements beyond those used within BAE Systems, e.g., LOLER, codes of compliance, weld specifications, and geometric tolerance.
  • Competent in computer-based analytical techniques including finite element analysis, CAD modelling and engineering schematics (Abaqus, S-Frame).
  • Support manufacturing, assembly, lifting, handling and installation processes of submarine structures, modules and components.
  • Support a busy environment by applying knowledge of facility and site restrictions relevant to shipping, handling, alignment and installation of hull units, large equipment and structures.
  • Contribute to production of concept drawings, layouts, and other technical outputs in line with contractual requirements to meet target dates and budget.
Your skills and experiences
  • Essential
  • Engineering Degree (BEng/MEng or equivalent) or HND with extensive relevant experience
  • Specialisations: Civil/Mechanical/Structural
  • Experience in Hand Analysis and Design Techniques including report writing
  • Understanding of Eurocodes and British Standards
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering, structural steelwork, lifting and LOLER
  • Working knowledge of ABAQUS, S-Frame, Foran, MathCAD and Excel
  • Member of Professional Institution – IMechE, ICE, IStructE. Incorporated Engineer IEng status or working towards Incorporated Status with aim to progress to CEng
  • Desirable: experience in a production/marine environment

The Specialist Structures Department

Senior Engineer will join a dual-function team (design and engineers) of 14 people at varying seniority (S3–S5). The team conducts engineering assessments of designs in support of build. You will work with design to produce equipment and/or support operations in production to deliver safety-critical equipment. Relocation support packages are available across all Submarines roles, subject to eligibility.
