Overview
An exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Senior Post Anaesthetic Care Practitioner in a busy theatres complex. The site has 18 operating theatres covering major specialties and a culture that welcomes new practitioners in a supportive, team‑oriented environment.
The post holder will work within the Theatre Recovery team to plan, deliver and evaluate all aspects of care for immediate post‑operative patients who have undergone surgery or a procedure within the Trust and associated areas.
Responsibilities
- Safe admission of patients to recovery and discharge to destinations such as the Theatre Admissions Unit, hospital wards or critical care.
- Coordinate a busy recovery area, facilitate education and training, and provide experienced support and guidance to the team.
- Support the Theatre Admissions Unit during times of staff shortage as required.
- Work on a 24/7 basis with varied shift patterns, including out‑of‑hours services; flexible working to meet the service needs (37.5 hours including weekends, nights and one 21:30 finish per week).
- Assist in the day‑to‑day running of the unit and maintain effective communication with theatres and multidisciplinary teams.
- Lead and support junior staff, provide guidance, and contribute to the efficient operation of a fast‑paced recovery area.
- Maintain infection control practices and accurate record keeping; input patient data onto the ORMIS system.
- Participate in clinical audits, promote evidence‑based practice, and support the training and development of other team members and students.
- Out of hours cover and rotation onto night duty as required; act up for Team Leader/Unit Manager in their absence when necessary.
Key Requirements / Qualifications
- Enthusiastic, resilient and professional with strong communication skills; a team player who can work autonomously and provide expert, skilled care to highly dependent patients.
- Ability to deliver skilled practical care in a specialised post‑anaesthetic recovery setting; capable of managing airway, IV lines/PCA, arterial/central lines, epidurals and other medications per Trust guidance.
- Competence in pain and nausea management, recognition of post‑operative complications, escalation according to NEWS, and immediate reporting of adverse changes.
- Demonstrable professional development through a portfolio and NHS knowledge and skills framework; commitment to ongoing learning and mentoring of junior staff.
- Ability to liaise with Unit Manager/Team Leader on stock management, equipment maintenance, and adherence to manufacturer guidelines.
