Job summary

There is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and innovative orthoptist to join the ophthalmology department at Jersey General Hospital.

The successful candidate will have a proven ability to work within multi-disciplinary teams, be hard working, flexible and motivated.

The candidate will also have experience of extended roles within their scope of practice to support the ophthalmology department.

The candidate must be able to work as part of a dynamic team in our busy department and community to ensure up to date clinical practice within the care delivery for the people of Jersey.

We welcome applicants from Orthoptists looking to extend their role and clinical experience, the caseload is extremely varied and will include core Orthoptic clinics with a mixture of paediatric and adult patients as well as an inpatient stroke service.

The successful candidate will also be the lead for our visual screening service which covers approximately 1000 children in over 30 schools and deputise for the Head orthoptist in their absence.

Main duties of the job

To perform a comprehensive range of diagnostic procedures and clinical assessments, working autonomously and making clinical decisions using own judgement and initiative to achieve accurate results and treatment planning, liaising with clinical lead for the glaucoma service if necessary, in the most complex cases.

To analyse and interpret specialist diagnostic test results and to identify new or deteriorating conditions and carry out relevant tests and refer to a Consultant or Non-Consultant Doctor, as appropriate to ensure the correct treatment and follow up care.

To advise patients on the appropriate care for their eye conditions and provide patients with complex written and verbal information about glaucoma and other eye conditions, tailoring the delivery to best suit the needs of the individual patient to maximise patient understanding and compliance with treatment.

To explain the implications of eye conditions, treatment options, medication and possible sideeffects to patients, in a sensitive manner, some of whom may be distressed or confused so there is good patient understanding of their care.

Undertake assessment of OCT scans and visual field results. To make diagnoses and decisions in straightforward and complex cases regarding the optimal outcome for each patient on an individual basis.

Qualifications Essential
  • BSc in optometrist and registered with the General Optical CouncilHigher qualification in glaucoma (e.g., professional certificate/diploma in glaucoma.

  • Independent Prescribing qualification.

  • Experience of assessing patients with glaucoma.
  • Experience of delivering high quality care to complex patients with multiple co-existing morbidities.
