As a Senior Nurse Practitioner in Microbiology, the primary focus of the role is the assessment, management and support of blood and stem cell donors, with a significant proportion of the work undertaken through detailed telephone consultations. The post holder acts as an autonomous clinical decision-maker, contacting donors to discuss microbiology screening results, including sensitive and complex markers such as HIV, hepatitis and other transfusion-transmissible infections, while gathering detailed medical, travel and risk history to determine donor and product eligibility. Using expert knowledge of donor selection guidelines, microbiology testing and risk assessment, the Senior Nurse Practitioner provides clear, compassionate advice, makes high-level clinical judgements on donor deferral or reinstatement, and ensures the safety of patients and blood products, while liaising with GPs and specialist services where required.
