Our Critical Care service is one of the longest established units in the country. Initially this was only as an Intensive Care Unit. As years progressed, a separate High Dependency Unit was built and opened at the tail end of the 1990s. Recent building work has created a combined Critical Care service operating from the Critical Care Ward. The combined number of admissions for level 2 and level 3 care in the past 12 months was 359 patients.

Critical Care unit has 12 critical care beds which are split as 6 intensive care beds and 6 high dependency beds. There is some flexibility that can allow this to be adapted according to clinical need, increasing the number of level 3 patients.

Training in Ultrasound is available with mentors in both FICE and Thoracic Ultrasound. There is an active educational programme for trainees from a variety of different training programmes and the service Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) doctors, with ICM tutorials once a week, daily teaching wards rounds, and a weekly ICM Grand Round and Journal Club.
