The Centre for Governance and Scrutiny (CfGS) is looking for an experienced local government governance or scrutiny professional to join our friendly, values-driven team for a one-year fixed term.

The role will be focused on the delivery of governance support projects to councils, and the delivery of training, learning and development support, working with other members of the CfGS team. The role holder will be expected to take on a diverse portfolio of work, managing and delivering diverse projects simultaneously.

In terms of consultancy, you will need to be able to diagnose and find innovative solutions to complex challenges and problems – and to develop and present recommendations in such a way as to deliver impact.

We’re keen to hear from people with substantial local government experience, in the governance, scrutiny and democratic services areas (ideally at service manager level or above) who enjoy working with others, navigating complex political environments and helping organisations to improve. The role will offer the successful applicant variety, learning and a chance to broaden their experiences.

At CfGS, we value curiosity, collaboration and learning through doing, and we’ll support you to build confidence, new skills and a wider professional profile during your time with us.

The role is offered full-time, but part-time and flexible working will be considered. It is home-based, with some travel and occasional evening meetings.

Deadline for applications: 5.00pm, Monday 12 January 2026
