Looking for a role that will have a meaningful impact on Contract Wordings? We are looking for an individual to work closely with our Underwriters and support functions to provide technical assistance to underwriters in the delivery of their business plans.

The opportunity

We have an excellent opportunity within our Wordings Team for a Senior Contract Wordings Technician. The role will report into our Head of Technical Wordings and will work closely with a team of experienced drafters, divisional leadership and underwriters.

The Wordings Team sits within the Office of the Chief Underwriting Officer (OCUO) team.

The OCUO is part of Markel International’s Corporate Management team, with responsibility for the Performance, Risk, Technical Underwriting, Oversight, Governance, Customer Outcomes and Reinsurance Placement for all Underwriting Divisions.

What you’ll be doing
Primary Functions
  • Provide reviews and advice on various wordings and products, including Markel products, Binding Authorities, Coverholder, and broker wordings.
  • Stay updated on regulatory, legal, and market developments, advising underwriters on potential impacts on Markel’s product offerings.
  • Develop and deliver guidance to underwriters on wording-related issues, including emerging trends.
  • Ensure the central wording repository is accurately maintained, with comprehensive records and reports.
  • Share technical knowledge across the business and ensure consistency in wordings.
  • Coordinate with team members to ensure timely service delivery to underwriters on wording matters.
  • Ensure wordings meet legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Simplify complex topics for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct thematic reviews of product lines post bind.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Support product and process changes due to regulatory developments.
  • Acquire knowledge of emerging risks and market trends to aid innovation and underwriting discipline.
  • Assist in the development of technical knowledge within product lines through training.
  • Provide assistance for internal and external audits.
  • Work closely with Compliance, Product Governance, Legal & Regulatory, IT, and Operations.
  • Participate in strategic project work and manage the delivery of required actions.
  • Attend meetings and lead the development of customized wordings and clauses for large or complex risks.
  • Engage in training and development opportunities to enhance technical expertise.
