Job description
What’s the role

Shipping & Maritime is Shell’s centre of expertise for all maritime matters, supporting customer-facing businesses through HSSE, operational excellence, commercial delivery, ship management, risk management, emergency response, local maritime knowledge and technology innovation.

The Senior Commercial Analyst plays a key role in maximizing value for Trading & Supply’s vessel fleet. The permanent role bridges Shipping & Maritime technical expertise and Trading & Supply, analysing data from time‑chartered ships to drive operational and technical improvements, monitor KPIs, foster energy efficiency and assess the commercial impact of emissions costs. Strong digital skills are essential for handling large, complex datasets.

Position is based in London, with potential international travel, and reports to the Commercial & New Business Development Manager for Trading & Supply.

Responsibilities
  • Provide first‑line support to Freight Operations, Trading and Optimization teams on vessel fuel, heel and cargo management; implement performance strategies for cost and environmental savings.
  • Deliver best‑practice efficiency advice and training to internal stakeholders and ship owners.
  • Support strategies to improve operational and technical efficiency across the fleet and replicate best practices.
  • Automate and process shipping data to identify value opportunities.
  • Provide analytical support from fleet‑wide performance trends to voyage‑specific equipment analysis.
  • Drive continuous improvement in commercial operations for voyages and ports.
  • Prepare operational efficiency reports and assist in benchmarking owned, managed and chartered vessels.
  • Contribute to Shell’s data analytics strategy and tools development.
  • Assess GHG regulatory impacts and support emissions monitoring and reporting projects.
  • Provide maritime expertise for Business Performance Reviews, including benchmarking and OPEX analysis.
  • Support Shipping & Maritime’s Ultimate Potential Value programme.
Qualifications

  • Operational Experience: Sailing experience on LNG carriers, particularly in roles with direct responsibility for cargo management and operations.
  • Optimisation Mind‑set: Ability to translate operational realities into data‑driven strategies for improving efficiency, reducing emissions and enhancing commercial value.
  • Digital & Analytical Expertise: Advanced proficiency in Alteryx, Python, Power BI, Spotfire; SQL and API experience desirable. Excel alone is insufficient.
  • Stakeholder Influence: Ability to build trust and credibility with internal teams and external partners, including ship owners and vessel crews.
  • Soft Skills: High cross‑cultural awareness, tact, diplomacy, strong communication skills and a passion for operational efficiency, innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Personal Attributes: Professionalism, teamwork, independence, curiosity, resilience in a fast‑paced trading environment and strong organisational and time‑management skills.
