The Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery Department at the Evelina London Children's Hospital offers a tertiary Children’s Orthopaedic Service for South London and associated counties. The hospital is also the local hospital for many children in South London, providing services such as paediatric trauma, a neonatal DDH screening service and a Ponseti clinic. The fellowship attracts Royal College and PMETB training approval. The Paediatric Orthopaedic Department has specialist tertiary services including the management of hip problems in teenagers, a developing paediatric knee injury service, limb deformity service, skeletal dysplasia, spina bifida and an extensive neurodisability service with gait laboratory support.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will, under the relevant consultants be responsible for the provision of orthopaedic service to the Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital Trust. This will include:

  • Developing skills in the assessment and management of orthopaedic patients in acute and elective children’s services.
  • To further enhance practical skills in children’s orthopaedic surgery.
  • To gain understanding of 3-dimensional gait analysis and its contributions to clinical decision making, prognosis and research.
  • To undertake theatre lists and outpatient clinics with or without supervision.
  • To gain understanding and appreciation of the contributions of the other disciplines involved in children’s orthopaedic care in a multidisciplinary setting which is sensitive to the needs of the patient and his or her family.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will join a team of 5 Consultants, 2 Specialist Registrars and 3 specialist orthopaedic nurses and will be expected to provide an elective orthopaedic and trauma service in conjunction with colleagues. You will be expected to participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care, to take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, and to contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development. The Department is keen to help the post holder to develop their area(s) of clinical interest and has a flexible approach in this regard.

This is a non-on call post but you will be accountable to liaise with the trauma team and to co-ordinate cover arrangements for internal and regional referrals during the week (08:00-17:00). As an organisation we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients. This means that some staff groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer services in the evenings or at weekends.

The fellowship is a 6-month appointment.

This is the tertiary Children’s Orthopaedic Service for South London and associated counties. It is also the local hospital for many children in South London. As such it attracts Royal College and PMETB training approval for fellowships such as this.

The fellowship is a 7 month appointment from the beginning of January 2026 until the beginning of August 2026 at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

  • Arash Afsharpad – Orthopaedic Surgeon, Lead for Paediatric Trauma
  • Martin Gough – Orthopaedic Surgeon, Lead for Neurodisability and Gait Lab
  • Michail Kokkinakis – Orthopaedic Surgeon, Lead for Adolescent Hip Preservation Surgery
  • Daniel Reed – Head of Service, Lead for Paediatric and Adolescent Knee Surgery
  • Gavin Spence – Orthopaedic Surgeon, Lead for Limb Reconstruction

The successful candidate will be accountable to Mr Michail Kokkinakis who will act as the educational supervisor and medical appraiser for the post holder throughout the fellowship post.
