Job description
Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Cardiac Anaesthesia and PICU

The post is designed for individuals who wish to pursue a career in paediatric cardiac anaesthesia and/or paediatric cardiac intensive care. This job would suit senior trainees nearing the end of their anaesthetic training or post CCT. It is a combined paediatric cardiac anaesthesia and paediatric intensive care fellowship with equal and simultaneous exposure to both specialties.

Main duties of the job
  • To manage PICU patients under the supervision of the Chief PICU Fellow and Consultant on Duty.
  • To attend cardiac anaesthesia lists including cardiac theatre, MRI, interventional cath lab, echo lists, etc.
  • To attend the cardiac surgical planning meetings.
  • To take part in a full‑shift PICU rota which will include being resident when on the night shift.
  • To undertake teaching and guideline development within the fixed rota.
  • To participate in the Paediatric Retrieval rota.
  • To participate in the training of the Retrieval Nurse Practitioners.
  • To undertake a PALS or APLS Course if not already completed.

Job responsibilities

The out of hours on‑call commitment is to PICU. This post is for an initial 12‑month period with a potential to extend. Anaesthesia commitments will include theatre lists in paediatric cardiac surgery, cardiac MRI, TOE, interventional cardiac catheter lab lists, and any list involving cardiac patients having non‑cardiac surgery including patients with adult congenital heart disease. The fellow is also expected to be available for 6 weekend general paediatric surgical lists over the 12 month period in the new children’s day surgery unit (CDSU). PICU commitments include the management of all admitted patients with an aim of increased allocation in managing paediatric cardiac surgical and medical patients. Participation in the PICU and retrieval service on‑call rota, participation in teaching and clinical governance activity in both specialties is expected.

Key Relationships

Patients and their parents/families/carers on PICU and in theatre; Clinical Staff on PICU and in theatre; Other Consultant staff in ECH and GSTT; Senior management team in ECH; Clinical teams in DGHs in the South Thames region when on retrievals.

Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration (obtained by start date)
  • Final FRCA or equivalent
  • Courses: APLS, EPLS, MEPA
Experience / Knowledge
  • Proven record of formal anaesthetic pathway
  • Paediatric Anaesthesia training or equivalent (minimum 6 months)
  • Previous experience in Cardiac or Paediatric Intensive Care
  • Previous experience in Cardiac Anaesthesia
  • Registration with the Intercollegiate Board for Training in P.I.C.M
Communication and relationship skills
  • Able to work under pressure as part of a multi‑disciplinary team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Education
  • Evidence of teaching at undergraduate level or post graduate level including allied healthcare professionals
Audit/Quality Improvement
  • Understands principles of clinical governance
