Overview
This post would be particularly beneficial for those doctors wishing to gain additional senior registrar experience in obstetrics and gynaecology following CCT/CESR, in a supportive environment. It provides an opportunity to complete the RCOG SIPM in Leadership and Management, with encouragement to complete QI projects, attend relevant meetings (e.g., Governance, PMRT, Gynae/Obs directorate meetings) and gain experience alongside the Clinical Directors and Directorate team in line with the SIPM curriculum. The Trust also offers a leadership programme with relevant courses. The post will provide the opportunity for the post holder to participate in clinical work at ST6-7 and we expect competencies in skills ST1-5 as outlined in the RCOG Training matrix. The post involves a max 48-hour EWTD full shift rota, with the remainder of the weekly job plan consisting of general middle grade duties to maintain skills in general obstetrics and gynaecology.
Responsibilities
- To support the inpatient service in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at New Cross Hospital.
- Outpatient workload: duties involve antenatal/gynaecology clinics and elective operating theatre lists.
- Research, education, audit and continuing professional development.
- In conjunction with colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.
- Duties will involve labour ward and emergency gynaecology cover, antenatal/gynaecology clinics and elective operating theatre lists. The post holder will be responsible for the clinical care of obstetric and gynaecological patients under supervision as necessary.
- The post holder will be responsible for the maintenance of proper case records and investigations on patients, and correspondence with General Practitioners and others as required.
- General elements: participate in clinical and other service activities to ensure high standard of patient care; flexible working and cross-cover; active involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training; contribute to management and development of the clinical service; contribute to research and development; provide cover for colleagues; observe Trust policies; health and safety responsibilities; hazard reporting; ensure contact arrangements for hospital staff; support for professional development with study leave; full-time fixed term appointment with an educational supervisor and mentor; internal department support for new appointee.
- Clinical audit/departmental teaching: the Trust supports a responsive environment with regular obstetrics and gynaecology teaching on Wednesday afternoons, regular teaching and audit sessions, and monthly multidisciplinary mortality and morbidity meetings.
- Contractual and governance details: whole-time appointment to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust; managerial accountability to the Clinical Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology; junior medical staff leave controls; GMC registration required; health clearance and DBS clearance; on-call and study/annual leave coverage; annual leave entitlement of 27 days plus 8 bank holidays (pro-rata for part-time).
Specialist areas
- High risk Obstetrics/Fetal Medicine: active fetal and maternal medicine service with specialist antenatal services; large level 3 neonatal unit.
- Gynaecologic surgery, including Minimal Access Surgery: opportunities for senior trainees with indirectly supervised lists; well-regarded training in general gynecological surgery.
- Ambulatory Gynaecology: ambulatory services at New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital, including Colposcopy, diagnostic hysteroscopy, endometrial resection and endometrial ablation.
- Urogynaecology: advanced urogynaecology and urodynamics (including video urodynamics); regular MDT meetings with colorectal and urology; long-term data collection and involvement in randomised trials.
- Robotic surgery: used for gynae-oncology procedures.
Clinical governance and professional development
- To take responsibility for continuing professional education in line with relevant college/faculty guidelines.
- To initiate and participate in research and audit programmes; develop skills for new ways of working across professions and organisations (e.g., community/primary care).
- To participate in clinical governance and maintain high standards of patient care.
General and administrative
- To maintain proper case records and investigations; correspondence with General Practitioners and others as required.
- To observe Trust policies and procedures; health and safety duties; hazard reporting; continuity of patient care during colleague absence; cover for study and annual leave as needed.
- Support for professional development including study leave within budget; full-time appointment with educational supervisor and mentor; departmental support for new appointee.
Clinical audit/departmental teaching (continued)
The Trust is supportive and maintains close contact across disciplines. Obstetrics and Gynaecology teaching occurs weekly with a regular teaching and audit session and a monthly multidisciplinary mortality and morbidity meeting. The appointment is for Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and the post holder is managerially accountable to the Clinical Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
Applicants should be registered with the General Medical Council by the date of commencement. The appointment is subject to health clearance and enhanced DBS. The appointed doctor may be required to perform duties in occasional emergencies; junior doctors are not expected to undertake this work for prolonged periods. You may need to cover for colleagues on study/annual leave during the day. Annual leave entitlement is 27 days plus 8 bank holidays per annum, pro rata for contracts of less than 12 months.
