All Doctors in hospital posts will generally be ward based during the 'normal' working day and expected to deliver the daily medical care of all the patients on their ward irrespective of specialty.

The overall objectives are to provide the successful candidate with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to achieve a high standard of work.

  • Keep an accurate and legible medical record.
  • Prescribe Safely.
  • Manage time and clinical priorities effectively.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues.
  • Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care.
  • Act in a professional manner at all times.
  • Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients within the specialty.
  • Maintain life-long learning and teaching.
  • Support FY1's and undergraduates.
Main duties of the job

The doctor is responsible with other staff for the ward care of patients and the maintenance of the patient's medical record. They will have opportunity to work with the consultants in outpatients clinics on occasions and also take responsibility for problems arising in the specialty with patients on the ward. They are also expected to facilitate the FY1's to be able to attend teaching. The doctor will be responsible for such other specific clinical duties as allocated by consultants including performing other duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration and licence to practice
  • Achievement of Foundation Year Two Competency
  • ALS
  • MRCS (ENT) or equivalent
Experience & Knowledge
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement and prioritise clinical need
  • Demonstrate appropriate technical competence and evidence of development of excellent diagnostic skills and judgement
  • Evidence of smooth progression through training programmes including evidence of achievement of ST1 & ST2 competencies in ENT at time of appointment.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision
  • Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within the specialty
  • Ability to prioritise work effectively
  • Willing to participate in hospital transfers
Academic Achievements
  • Willingness of using evidence base to support decision making
