Job description

Applications are invited for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow in laparoscopic colorectal surgery based in the colorectal unit at Peterborough City Hospital.

This is approved for fellowship training by the Royal College of Surgeons and is on the National Fellowship Scheme's list of approved fellowships. PCH is a new hospital, and has been receiving patients since 2010. The unit has 6 colorectal surgery consultants.

Most of the consultants are fellowship trained and well‑experienced. We deal with roughly 225 colorectal cancers per year, the majority of resections are conducted laparoscopically.

We are looking to recruit a peri‑CCT/CESR candidate who is keen, enthusiastic and demonstrates leadership skills, in addition to surgical ability. Training will be provided in laparoscopic and general colorectal surgery as well as colonoscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic).

There is no on‑call commitment associated with this post. Please see job description for full details.

Main duties of the job

This is a realistic fellowship, as we feel there are enough training opportunities at PCH to serve the training needs of a fellow with 2‑4 laparoscopic resections a week. The goal of the fellowship would be to attain competence at laparoscopic colonic resections and introduction to the principles of laparoscopic TME. In addition, the fellow could join in other open cases, redo resections, emergency colorectal surgery joint cases as required by training needs.

We hope the fellow would be JAG accredited, thereby allowing some independent endoscopy lists. There are opportunities to keep your hand in with lap cholecystectomies, hernias etc. (General Surgery training registrars will have first priority for non‑colorectal cases). The endoscopy unit is very trainee friendly, with opportunity to consolidate your experience.

The fellow would have an administrative role in the management of the colorectal unit and the junior staff, as well as rota organisation within the colorectal unit. Additional responsibilities would include database management and overseeing the local ERAS program.

We would anticipate at one publication to be generated for the 6 months, this is a key requirement of the job.

The fellowship is designed for yr 5/6 trainees, preferably having passed their CCT/CESR. We would be interested in pro‑active individuals with some management/leadership skills.
