Job summary

A specialist educational provider is seeking a proactive SEN Teaching Assistant to support children with complex needs in Bury. In this role, you'll help children access structured learning, build emotional resilience, and promote positive behavior. Job description

We are seeking a caring, resilient and proactive SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Bury. In this role, you will support children with a range of complex needs, helping them access structured learning, develop key skills and feel safe, valued and understood in the classroom.

  • Support the delivery of personalised, differentiated learning activities based on individual SEN profiles and EHCP outcomes.
  • Build warm, trusting relationships to promote emotional regulation, engagement and positive behaviour.
  • Provide 1:1 and group support to pupils with autism, SEMH, communication needs, sensory needs or developmental delays.
  • Implement behaviour plans, sensory strategies and therapeutic approaches as directed by SENCOs and teachers.
  • Encourage independence and communication using visuals, modelling, routines and scaffolding.
  • Assist with de-escalation and emotional support in a calm, trauma-informed manner.
  • Maintain accurate observations, safeguarding notes and progress information.
  • Experience supporting children with SEN or SEMH needs (school, care, or specialist setting).
  • A patient, empathetic and resilient approach.
  • Full availability Monday–Friday during school hours.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, inclusive practice and behaviour support.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Experience with autism, sensory needs or behaviour support.
  • Familiarity with PECs, Makaton, visual timetables or sensory tools.
  • Experience in specialist or alternative provision.
  • Two years of references
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (support available)
  • Overseas police checks if applicable
