Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and adaptable Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teacher to provide supply cover within educational settings in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. The role involves supporting pupils with a range of additional needs, ensuring their educational and social development in line with statutory requirements and school policies. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with teaching staff to deliver personalised learning programmes that meet the individual needs of pupils.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver high‑quality, differentiated lessons tailored to meet the needs of pupils with special educational needs.
• Assess and monitor pupils’ progress, adapting teaching methods and resources to support individual learning objectives.
• Implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and contribute to the preparation of reports and documentation for pupils’ progress and development.
• Manage classroom behaviour effectively to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
• Work collaboratively with support staff, external professionals, and families to promote holistic development of pupils.
• Maintain accurate records of attendance, progress, and any incidents in accordance with school policies.
• Ensure compliance with safeguarding procedures and promote the welfare of all pupils.
• Participate in professional development activities and remain up to date with current SEN legislation and best practices.

Required Qualifications

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) recognised within the United Kingdom.
• Evidence of recent and relevant continuing professional development in special educational needs.

Education

• A degree in education or a related discipline is essential.
• Additional qualifications or training in special educational needs are highly desirable.

Experience

• Proven experience teaching pupils with special educational needs in a school environment.
• Experience of working in a variety of educational settings, preferably including both mainstream and specialist provisions.
• Familiarity with developing and implementing Individual Education Plans.

Knowledge and Skills

• Strong understanding of the SEND Code of Practise and relevant legislation.
• Ability to adapt teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
• Excellent classroom management skills that promote positive behaviour.
• Effective communication skills with pupils, parents, and colleagues.
• Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Postgraduate qualification specialising in special educational needs or inclusive education.
• Training in behaviour management or therapeutic approaches relevant to SEN.
• Experience with assistive technologies and differentiated learning resources.

Working Conditions

• Work takes place primarily within school premises in Newton Aycliffe.
• Full‑time hours are expected, typically aligned with the school day, including occasional participation in staff meetings and training sessions.
• The role involves working with children with a wide range of learning difficulties, physical disabilities, and behavioural challenges.
• Supply work may involve short notice assignments and flexibility in availability.
• Safeguarding checks and compliance with child protection policies are mandatory.
