A healthcare non-profit organization is looking for a passionate salaried GP to support a primary care clinic within HMP Forest Bank, Manchester. The role includes providing essential medical services, supporting healthcare needs, and contributing to the reduction of health inequalities. Candidates must possess a UK medical qualification and demonstrate leadership qualities. Experience in primary care mental health and chronic disease management is essential.

We are a values-based organisation with the patient at the heart of what we do. We aim to achieve quantifiable impact and are looking for GPs who are committed to our cause to join us. We are seeking a salaried GP to join our MDT, delivering a primary care clinic within HMP Forest Bank. A session consists of 8 appointments (15 minutes each) and is face to face. Presentations are as with community primary care as we aim to deliver equivalence of care within our clinics. No prior prison experience is required as you will be given the training required for the role, although prior experience is preferable. The right candidate will be passionate about reducing health inequalities, empathetic, and enjoy working within an MDT. Leadership qualities and a willingness to explore a different, paced form of primary care are desirable.
GPs are required to provide reception cover from 5pm-9pm Monday to Friday (to be discussed).
The post holder will provide face-to-face clinical services including the medical component of prison reception assessment care, appointed, unscheduled and emergency care services to inpatients and the segregation unit. Core responsibilities include: full clinical assessment of patients; formulation of differential diagnoses and management plans; pharmacological assessment and prescribing; request and interpretation of clinical investigations; appropriate referrals and follow-up to other specialist areas and secondary care services; information and advice to facilitate informed choice for ongoing treatment and care; medical assessment and monitoring of chronic diseases in accordance with NICE guidance and local clinical policy; appropriate end-of-life care under clinical supervision from palliative care specialists where needed. All GPs are expected to maintain up-to-date knowledge to formulate robust care plans for the full range of complex health needs of vulnerable groups, with emphasis on substance misuse and offender health in a secure environment. Psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and management of prisoners with serious mental ill health will be the responsibility of the specialist mental health provider.

A session consists of 8 appointments (15 mins long) and are face to face. Presentations are as with community primary care as we are aiming to deliver equivalence of care within our clinics. No prior prison experience is required as you will be given the training required for the role although prior experience is preferable. The GP most suited to this role is someone passionate about reducing health inequalities, empathetic, and enjoys working within an MDT. You will need leadership qualities and be ready to explore a different, lesser known but more paced form of primary care.
All GPs including the Lead GP are expected to support general healthcare needs and basic clinical monitoring when the prisoners’ psychiatric condition is stable.

Please note the welcome payment is payable to new candidates joining Spectrum Community Health CIC. We are flexible in matching availability with our work patterns and can offer part-time and flexible working options.
All GPs are to support the general healthcare needs and basic clinical monitoring when psychiatric conditions are stable.
We are committed to maintaining a supportive environment for those new to prison clinic work and provide taster days as well as direct conversations with current GPs for practical guidance.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a Disclosure submission to the DBS to check for any previous convictions.
