Overview

• Job Type: Freelance (Day rate negotiable)
• Location: Remote with occasional travel to the University of Bath
• Start Date: 29/09/2025
• End Date: 31/07/2026

We are seeking a highly skilled Ruby Developer to join our small but highly productive development team at the University of Bath. This freelance role involves project-based digital development and consultancy within a bespoke Ruby-based technical environment. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work remotely, with some travel to the University as required.

Day-to-day of the role

• Engage in high-level Ruby-based digital development, showcasing a strong portfolio of previous work.
• Utilize standard Ruby-based development software and workflows, including GitLab.
• Quickly and efficiently get up to speed with complex systems and infrastructure.
• Lead digital development tasks independently, without the need for granular management.
• Advise on technical strategy and infrastructure within an Agile development framework.
• Use Jira or similar project management software to manage tasks and workflows.
• Occasionally travel to the University of Bath for collaboration and project management.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Extensive experience in Ruby-based digital development.
• Familiarity with Ruby-based development software and workflows, such as GitLab.
• Proven ability to lead projects and work independently.
• Experience in Agile development environments and using project management tools like Jira.
• Experience working in a UK university environment is preferred, particularly with the University of Bath’s Digital infrastructure, including Typecase and Typecase for Courses CMS.
• Fluent in written and spoken English.
• Right to work in the UK.
