About the Role

Abatec is looking for an experienced Risk Manager to join our client's team on a flagship civil engineering infrastructure project in Somerset (HPC). This is a highly strategic, high-visibility, high-impact role where you will drive risk management across all disciplines (design, construction, commercial, environment, etc.) and directly influence decision-making at senior levels.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead development and maintenance of the project Risk Management Plan and framework.
  • Facilitate risk & opportunity workshops with design, construction, commercial, and technical teams.
  • Maintain and continuously update the project risk register, ensuring clear risk definitions and ownership.
  • Conduct Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) for cost and schedule to support contingency planning and forecasting.
  • Prepare and deliver regular risk reports, heat-maps, dashboards, and risk trend analysis to senior management.
  • Monitor and challenge risk mitigation actions; track progress and escalate emerging risks.
  • Support scenario and change-impact analyses (design changes, scope changes, delay scenarios).
  • Work closely with contractors and partners to ensure consistent risk management practices.
  • Identify and drive opportunities to improve project outcomes (cost savings, schedule efficiencies, innovation).
Person Specification

Essential:

  • Significant experience (5+ years) managing risk on large-scale civil engineering or infrastructure projects (e.g., rail, highways, utilities, tunnelling).
  • Strong technical understanding of infrastructure delivery: design, construction, procurement, change control.
  • Proficient with risk modelling / analysis tools (Ideally Enterprise Risk but Safran Risk, Primavera Risk or other relevant software would be helpful).
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex data into clear risk insights.

Desirable:

  • Relevant professional qualification (e.g., IRM, PMI-RMP, APM Risk).
  • Degree in engineering, project management, risk, or related discipline.
  • Experience working in joint ventures, Tier 1 contracting, or client-side infrastructure organisations.
Benefits
  • Be a key part of a major, transformational infrastructure project in Somerset.
  • Work on a freelance basis (flexible, high autonomy) while earning competitive day rates.
  • Influence major decisions and drive real value through risk-informed leadership.
  • Join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team committed to delivery excellence.
