Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the existing Respiratory Nurse Team at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. We are looking to recruit a band 6 nurse with a keen interest in Respiratory Medicine.

As a respiratory nursing team it is expected we are able to support the whole spectrum of non‑malignant respiratory disease, including but not limited to Asthma, COPD, Pulmonary Vascular Disease, Tuberculosis, Bronchiectasis, Pleural Disease, Interstitial Lung Disease, Sleep medicine and Chronic Respiratory Failure.

Whilst no one specialist nurse can be an expert in all areas it would be expected that all team members proactively develop subspecialty skill sets in one or more of these disease groups, to allow the nursing team as a whole to contain the skills necessary to support our consultant colleagues in the management of the full spectrum of respiratory disease afflicting our patient community.

This specialist role will support the organisation in the delivery of care for respiratory patients and their families, in accordance with the philosophy and standards of care within the specialty, ensuring that Trust values and beliefs are upheld.

This role will look to suit a motivated, enthusiastic individual. The ideal candidate must demonstrate their ability to work under pressure, be adaptable to change and thrive in an environment with a varied workload.

This position is a permanent role at 37.5 hours per day.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide a professional, specialist clinical support to medical and nursing staff in relation to respiratory patients for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Provide leadership that promotes patient focused care.
  • Ensure patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are seen within 24 hours of admission to achieve best practice tariff and identify those suitable for early supported discharge.
  • Provide clinical leadership ensuring the delivery of the highest professional standards through junior staff development.
  • Interpret Arterial Blood Gases (ABG) to assist in oxygen assessments.
  • Provide a comprehensive and appropriate short and long term management plan for respiratory patient, using expert knowledge and clinical reasoning.
  • Develop into an independent autonomous practitioner.
  • Work alongside the community COPD/Oxygen teams providing seamless care.
  • Provide expert nursing advice and support to other Health Care Professionals (HCP).
  • Develop and deliver nurse led clinics.
  • Participate and support the CURE tobacco addiction team.
  • Identifying training needs within the team and deliver education and training as required.
  • Provide mentoring, advice and support to associate specialist nurses, respiratory ward nurses and students.
  • Deliver Toolbox training sessions.
  • Deliver NIV training.
  • Support NIV therapy within the clinical setting.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and adhere to professional, clinical, national and local guidelines.

If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £54.90. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary.
