Job description
About us

UCL’s Department of Computer Science (CS) is a top-ranked Computer Science Department in the UK. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) evaluation, UCL Computer Science was ranked second in the UK for research power and first in England.

About the role

The project will be carried out at the Department of Computer Science, in the Machine Intelligence Lab (https://www.machineintelligencelab.ai) headed by Professor Mirco Musolesi. The lab is part of UCL AI Centre and the Intelligent Systems group. The candidate will carry out world‑class research in artificial intelligence with a focus on reinforcement learning, generative learning (e.g., foundational models) applied to multi‑agent systems and/or human‑AI interaction.

Grade 7 salary £45,103

This role is an open‑ended contract with a funding end date of 31st May 2026 in the first instance, with the possibility of extending for a further 6 months pending approval.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B (salary £39,148–£41,833 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD Thesis.

About you

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Computer Science (or related fields) or be close to completion (e.g., the candidate should have submitted their PhD dissertation) for an appointment at grade 7 or a relevant Master or Undergraduate degree for an appointment at grade 6B. The candidate should have experience in the broad area of artificial intelligence and its applications, as proven by publications in key conferences and journals. Previous experience (or a demonstrated strong interest) in reinforcement learning and generative learning will be considered as a plus. Experience in the area of human‑AI interaction (broadly intended) might also be beneficial for this role.
