Overview

JOB TITLE: Registered Veterinary Nurse (Surgery Focus)

REPORTING TO: Lead Theatre RVN, Head of Nursing Services

START DATE: Autumn 2025

HOURS: Full-Time (40-Hours/Week)

SALARY: £32,000-£37,000 DOE

London Vet Specialists are seeking a Registered Veterinary Nurse with an interest or experience in surgical nursing to join the team as a Surgery-Focused RVN in our new multidisciplinary referral centre in Hammersmith in Autumn 2025.

Company Profile London Vet Specialists originated as a boutique small animal referral centre in Belsize Park, North London and in May 2024 relocated to a new state-of-the-art site in Hammersmith, West London. The hospital offers specialist-led services across orthopaedics, soft-tissue surgery, internal medicine, ophthalmology, anaesthesia & analgesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, oncology, neurology & emergency and critical care. Linnaeus is a partnership of primary care and referral veterinary practices across the UK and Ireland dedicated to high quality patient care and professional development.

Role Overview

The Surgery-Focused RVN will work with the Head of Nursing Services (HoNS), Lead Nurses, Clinical Director and Clinicians to ensure the efficient delivery of outstanding patient care within soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery services. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in and facilitate ophthalmic, neurosurgery and interventional cardiology procedures. Responsibilities include high standards of patient and client care, surgical preparation, circulating theatre assistance, scrub nursing, monitoring sedation and anaesthesia, wards care, handling and maintenance of surgical equipment (including laparoscopy, arthroscopy & fluoroscopy), assisting with diagnostic procedures, nurse consultations, accurate record keeping and effective communication and teamwork. The role is a blend of theatre support, anaesthesia monitoring, diagnostics assistance, wards nursing, consultation and client care, with a preference for theatre duties where possible. The role is prioritised within the surgery discipline, but may include cross-coverage within LVS within the capabilities of an RVN when necessary. Previous referral experience is not essential as training and support will be provided.

Leadership Our surgery team is led by Head of Soft Tissue Surgery Dr Janet McClaran and Head of Orthopaedic Surgery Dr Kiki Tarvin.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provision of high-quality patient care primarily within the soft tissue, orthopaedic, ophthalmic and neurology surgery services.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic and capability across nursing duties, including hygiene standards and infection control.
  • Prioritise surgery inpatient care and implement nursing care plans.
  • Ensure the comfort and safety of patients undergoing investigations, surgery and hospitalisation.
  • Maintenance and care of surgical instruments, kits and sterile supplies.
  • Accurate record keeping, particularly anaesthetic and hospitalisation records in SmartFlow.
  • Assist with stock management within the department and co-ordinate with the pharmacy and purchasing assistant.
  • Work with Lead Nurses and HoNS to plan daily case load and address issues or concerns.
  • Participate in team briefings and meetings to ensure effective communication.
  • Contribute to team reflections of incidents and near misses to continually improve patient care and safety (Halo reporting).
  • Support ISFM cat-friendly standards and Dogs Trust/BVBA dog-friendly standards across the hospital.
  • Maintain competence across nursing areas and participate in role swaps where appropriate to preserve competence.
  • Participate in team committees (Sustainability, Culture & Wellbeing, Dog/Cat-Friendly committees) to shape hospital standards and culture.
