The Paediatric Emergency Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital and the ChildrensUrgent Care Centre at South Tyneside are looking to recruit a motivated and dynamic qualified childrens nurse to join their team in delivering quality urgent and emergency nursing care to the paediatric population
Thesuccessful candidate will be joining a team of over 70 experienced qualifiednurses, nurse practitioners and health care assistants who see and treat inexcess of 40,000 patients across both sites each year and will be involved inall aspects of nursing care to children with conditions ranging from minortrauma through to major medical presentations
This is an exciting time for individual developmentas we respond to the evolving demand of urgent and emergency care deliveryacross Sunderland and South Tyneside. The post holder will be based atSunderland Royal Hospital but will rotate between the Paediatric EmergencyDepartment at SRH and the Childrens Urgent Care Unit at South TynesideDistrict Hospital on a regular basis to enhance their skills and knowledge incare delivery to children requiring non-urgent, urgent and emergency treatment.

Underthe Urgent and Emergency Care Directorate, the state-of-the-art PaediatricEmergency Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital briefly comprises of anindependent paediatric reception desk and waiting area, 2 triage rooms, a 6bedded high acuity area, which includes 2 high dependency bays and anadolescent mental health room, a resuscitation suite, a 5 bedded low acuityarea and an 8 bedded short stay assessment area.
South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust boaststhe only dedicated Childrens Urgent Care Unit in the region. Set up in August2021, the unit is nurse-led and treats children who present with a range of minorinjuries and minor illnesses. It consists of an independent reception, 2waiting areas, an initial assessment room, 4 assessment bays, and a treatmentroom.
Dutiesof the post include, but are not limited to, triage and assessment, caring forchildren in the high acuity area/high dependency rooms/resuscitation room,administering medications, carrying out physiological observations andresponding to changes within these, applying treatments and dressings, healthpromotion, nurse led discharge for a limited range of conditions, distractionand play therapy and applying longer term care in the short stay assessmentunit.
Personaldevelopment opportunities can be gained through in-house training, simulationtraining and external courses including PILS, APLS, NLS, clinical skills andleadership modules. Career progression is supported and encouraged and wecurrently have almost 30 positions at Band 6 or above within our team includingSisters, Managers, Emergency Nurse Practitioners and Advanced ClinicalPractitioners
Applicantsmust be highly motivated individuals who can demonstrate a genuine desire tocontribute to paediatric urgent and emergency care across Sunderland and SouthTyneside. The successful candidates will be registered childrens nurses whocan demonstrate a friendly, honest and caring attitude and are willing todevelop their skills, knowledge and role within the departments as theirexperience grows.
Recentexposure working in an acute paediatric environment is essential and previousexperience in a Paediatric Emergency Department/Urgent Care Centre would bedesirable. You will also be expected to demonstrate a reliable work record,flexibility in working hours and evidence of continued professionaldevelopment.
Thedepartments offer a 24-hour service and staff work varying shift patterns toensure the service needs are met
