Job description

As a Registered Nurse you will support the modern matron in the everyday running of the cancer and oncology outpatient department. The role will involve developing junior staff and assisting the modern matron in developing current and new services, as well as, acting as the co‑ordinator of care and managing the unit.

Responsibilities
  • Strong, professional leadership qualities are needed at this level. It is critical to the quality of care, staff morale, and the learning environment.
  • You will adhere to NMC Code of Practice at all times and ensure ward compliance with and application of hospital policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of Governance systems in the ward/department relating to Risk Management, Health and Safety and Controls Assurance.
  • Work within Oncology/haematology; supporting clinicians and clinical nurse specialist with the running of clinics.
  • Assess patients undergoing anti‑cancer treatments and radiotherapy; and work with the acute oncology service.
  • Co‑ordinating the team in providing a high standard of care to the patients, including administering curative/palliative treatment, symptom control, palliative and end‑of‑life care. Ensuring patients and relatives are cared for in a holistic way.
  • Assisting matrons and ADON's in developing and maintaining policies, guidelines and SOPs incorporating evidence‑based best practice.
  • Co‑ordinating the nursing team in the administration of oral systemic anti‑cancer therapy (SACT) in an outpatient setting, to our patients, supporting both patient and relative.
  • Participate in research and clinical audits.
  • At all times act within current Southend Hospital NHS Trust Policies and Guidelines of Clinical Practice and the NMC code of conduct.
  • Assist the matrons in managing the team in the department adhering to Human Resource policies and practices.
  • Attend meetings, which are informative and relevant to the directorate.
  • Maintain high standards of safe and effective care and discharge of patients during and following recovery periods.
  • Manage staff within the Oncology Outpatients, including staff rosters and appraisals.
