Job description

We currently have a vacancy within our Street Scene & Open Spaces team based at Carlu Close, Hitchcocks Business Park, Willand and covering the Mid Devon area. We are looking for a confident and organised person to work as part of a team in a busy operational environment.

At Mid Devon we offer the successful candidate an opportunity to actively work with our residents to encourage greater recycling and improve environmental awareness. The successful candidate will work with a range of different services, including the enforcement team to ensure that they are utilising our recycling schemes correctly and promote all aspects of sustainable waste management.

The role

The role will be divided between office and operational working. It will involve engaging with residents to assess their needs, providing advice and tips on how to improve waste management. While in the office, the successful candidate will be responsible for the management and input of data onto live databases, therefore a competent understanding of Microsoft Office systems would be advantageous.

Community engagement will be a critical function of the role including liaising with local schools and volunteer groups to provide advice and education on recycling.

You will also need to have good organisational and interpersonal skills, and be able to communicate at all levels with the public and colleagues.

Duties
  • Work with our collection crews and residents to ensure they are using our recycling schemes correctly and promote all aspects of sustainable waste management
  • Assist in promoting and implementing the Council’s Waste Strategy
  • Manage the promotion of waste minimisation and recycling through educating residents and businesses to manage its household rubbish in an environmentally-responsible manner and providing advice on waste issues
  • Work with colleagues in the development of promotional materials and to participate in activities, campaigns and events to increase awareness of waste minimisation and recycling
  • Receive, prioritise and deal with requests in relation to Street Scene services and procedures including the recording and management of a case through to completion
  • Act as a specialised point of contact for members of the public, customers, businesses and stakeholders, aiming to resolve the majority of enquiries at first point of contact. This includes dealing with customers who contact by telephone, in writing, e‑mail, internally, externally or online
  • Maintain databases, spreadsheets and filing systems (electronic and paper) and provide accurate reports including statistical information as required. Record all transactions on supporting workflow programs as per procedures. Maintain a level of competence in the use of new technology and programmes and help develop new systems as required
