Job description

Balmoral, a division of Balmoral Group, provides surface and subsurface buoyancy, insulation and elastomer products and services to the global energy, defence, subsea communications and oceanographic industries.

We are recruiting for a R & D Engineer position within the Engineering Department in Aberdeen.

The successful candidate will be an integral member of a thriving ambitious R&D team sharing the same drive and enthusiasm as their peers. The jobholder will be producing innovative engineering solutions primarily based upon steel, polymer and composite structures, bringing products from concept through to prototype and finally offering support to the wider business for product launch. Ensuring all developments consider cost, lead time and quality are imperative.

The role will involve design and inception of products across all of the company's sectors with particular focus on Oil and Gas, Fixed bottom Wind and Floating Wind. The jobholder will have access to state of the art design tools and production facilities to support them in their role. They will be required to show the ability to work independently with minimal supervision at all times as well as show initiative and innovation in all areas of their work.

Responsibilities
  • To design Balmoral products from initial concept to production within the offshore Renewables and Oil and Gas sectors.
  • To use engineering tools efficiently.
  • To produce information for production department.
  • To assist with the development of custom design software.
  • To innovate.
  • To formulate test procedures.
  • To define and supervise validation trials.
  • To contribute to the continuing effort to reduce costs.
  • To assist with the management of engineering data using engineering data management software.
  • Assist and contribute towards the development of the department, company standards and ultimately our product range.
Qualifications
  • Required: Engineering degree – Mechanical, Structural, Civil, Aerospace, Renewables or naval architecture.
  • Desirable: Already a member of a professional institution with a view to working towards Chartered status.
  • Desirable: 2-3 years of relevant industry experience or placement/work experience in a relevant industry.
Experience
  • Knowledge of FEA systems preferably ANSYS.
  • Knowledge of CAD.
  • Knowledge of Mathcad.
  • Experience within a manufacturing environment preferably within an Oil and Gas environment.
  • Self‑motivated.
  • Desire to learn.
  • Influencing key stakeholders within and beyond our company to advance projects through our product qualification process with strong technical leadership.
