We're seeking a Protection & Control Engineer to support major substation projects on a long-term fixed-term contract. This role is fully remote with occasional travel as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Review existing substation protection schemes and incorporate them into updated designs (including anti-islanding, generator intertie settings, SPS, and other non-standard schemes).
- Lead protection design for capital projects and define relay protection functions and schemes.
- Review contractor relay settings, logic diagrams (including IEC 61850 / GOOSE messaging), and operational descriptions.
- Perform or review relay coordination studies and assess required levels of system coordination based on changes in fault duty or system performance.
- Review relay settings for temporary builds, mobile units, and staged construction sequences.
- Provide input to system modelling tools (e.g., ASPEN OneLiner) for protection-related updates.
- Support implementation, testing, and commissioning of protection and automation systems.
- Provide feedback and recommendations to improve internal protection and design standards.
- Ensure all as-built documentation is captured and stored correctly.
- Lead automation and integration design at substation level, including SCADA point lists, HMI screens/settings, and IED data mapping.
- Prepare substation operational descriptions (HMI operation, relay front-panel behaviour, etc.).
- Review digital substation maintenance data point lists.
- Track required licences, firewall access, and key automation/integration deliverables for project execution.
- Conduct constructability reviews to ensure adequate protection, automation, and SCADA coverage for all outage steps.
Key Requirements
- Strong experience in substation protection & control engineering.
- Knowledge of relay protection systems and settings.
- Familiarity with IEC 61850, GOOSE messaging, digital substations.
- Experience with fault studies / coordination studies (e.g., ASPEN, ETAP).
- Understanding of SCADA, HMI, and substation automation systems.
- Experience reviewing or delivering contractor design packages.
- Ability to support commissioning and testing activities.
