Locum Job Opportunity: Prison Cleared Registered Mental Health Nurse
Setting: Prison Mental Health, Lowdham Grange, UK
Pay Rate: £26.00 – £37.00 hourly
Working Pattern: Full-time (08:00–16:00/18:00)
Contract: Ongoing

Job Purpose

To deliver safe, effective, and person-centred mental health care to adult male prisoners in a secure setting, while maintaining the highest clinical and security standards.

What You Will Do
  1. Clinical Care:
    • Conduct thorough mental health assessments and risk evaluations.
    • Develop and implement tailored care plans.
    • Provide evidence-based interventions for a wide range of mental health conditions including depression, psychosis, and self-harm.
    • Administer and monitor psychiatric medication.
    • Deliver crisis intervention and rapid-response care when needed.
  2. Security & Risk Management:
    • Adhere strictly to all prison security protocols.
    • Conduct ongoing risk assessments, with a focus on suicide prevention and behavioural risks.
    • Accurately document and report clinical incidents in line with NHS and prison governance policies.
    • Work in close coordination with GPs, psychiatrists, psychologists, substance misuse specialists, and prison officers.
    • Attend and contribute to clinical handovers and multi-agency case conferences.
    • In senior roles, supervise junior staff and coordinate nursing care delivery.
  3. Professional Development:
    • Maintain NMC registration and comply with the Nursing Code of Conduct.
    • Participate in clinical supervision, CPD, and mandatory training.
    • Support ongoing service improvements and contribute to audits and quality initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with a valid NMC pin.
  • Current prison clearance (Security Vetting).
  • Experience in mental health care, particularly in forensic, secure, or acute settings.
  • Solid understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, and equality in care.
  • Knowledge of forensic mental health and trauma-informed care.
  • Familiarity with prison healthcare systems and national guidance.
  • Leadership experience or readiness to step into Nurse-in-Charge responsibilities.
