Overview

Principal Mechanical Design Engineer - Travel Paid + Bonus

A leading MEP contractor in London seeks an experienced and commercially astute Principal Mechanical Engineer to join their team. This is a senior role in the design and delivery of high-profile commercial and data centre projects.

The Role

As a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll take ownership in delivering the mechanical design and coordination process on complex projects. You'll lead project teams, engage with clients and consultants, and ensure technical excellence while maintaining a strong focus on commercial performance.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and coordination on large-scale commercial and data centre projects.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers.
• Collaborate with consultants, architects, and BIM teams to deliver high-quality, coordinated designs.
• Conduct site inspections and attend client/project meetings.
• Ensure full compliance with UK regulations, CIBSE standards, and industry best practices.
• Maintain a strong commercial focus—monitor costs, manage budgets, and identify value engineering opportunities.
• Champion innovation, sustainability, and continuous improvement in engineering delivery.

Requirements

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent).
• Extensive experience in the building services sector, particularly on commercial and data centre projects.
• Strong commercial background with a proven ability to manage budgets, monitor costs, and deliver value.
• Excellent understanding of UK building regulations and MEP coordination.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and mechanical design/calculation software.
• Strong communication, leadership, and project management skills.

Applicants from a consultancy background are welcome. We’re open to professionals looking to transition into a contractor-side role.

Additional Information

• Typically 5 days office based with 2 days WFH available per month.
• The company covers travel expenses to and from work.
