Job Title: Principal Engineer - MAE - HV Substation Protection & Control

Murphy is recruiting for a Principal Engineer - MAE - HV Substation Protection & Control to work with Murphy Applied Engineering on HV Substations, with a Protection and Control background.

Our engineering teams represent a multi-disciplined range of skills, adding value across sectors, and pushing the boundaries of digital construction, engineering innovation, and design to deliver sustainable and economical solutions.

Under Murphy Applied Engineering, our in-house teams include civil, structural, mechanical, geotechnical, and process engineers. They design both permanent and temporary works and serve as a trusted source of advice for Murphy colleagues and external clients.

A day in the life of a Principal Engineer - HV Substation Protection & Control

  1. Interpret client design specifications and lead the team in developing conceptual designs.
  2. Lead the creation of specifications and Bill of Quantities for equipment for bidding processes.
  3. Assess supplier quotations and engage suppliers to align them with specifications.
  4. Estimate time required for detailed design work.
  5. Identify and evaluate chargeable work, maintaining proper records.
  6. Ensure detailed design work complies with company procedures and standards.
  7. Produce detailed designs, calculations, drawings, and diagrams per relevant standards.
  8. Perform design checks for team members and external designers.
  9. Provide guidance on design and operational issues.
  10. Consider design risks and prepare risk assessments.
  11. Manage and supervise design team members and subcontractors, ensuring quality and timeliness.
  12. Mentor junior engineers and contribute to their development.
  13. Coordinate with project teams to produce construction-ready drawings.
  14. Undertake site visits and surveys.

  • Manage interfaces with internal and external design teams.
  • Monitor and administer change controls.
  • Maintain relationships with technical consultants and suppliers, managing their input for design, development, and delivery.
