Job description

Location: Bedford, MK42. Hourly Rate: £13.28 per hour. Hours per week: 6-8 hours (4 hours per week during term time and 8 hours per week during school holidays, preferably on weekends).

Job Summary

The role is to support Marcus, a 19‑year‑old young man with Autism and Learning Disabilities, in accessing the community, staying active and enjoying recreational activities such as walking, visiting local parks, shopping, swimming, fun fairs, trampolines, bowling or dining out. The support worker should get to know his communication style, preferences and wishes, treating him with respect at all times.

Key Responsibilities
  • Encourage Marcus to engage in community activities and keep him active.
  • Assist him in walking, visiting local parks and other outdoor activities.
  • Support his participation in shop visits, swimming, fun fairs, trampolining, bowling, and dining out.
  • Help him understand and communicate his choices and wishes.
  • Use a patient and supportive approach, allowing him to move at his own pace.
  • Recognise when to step in and provide the necessary support to complete activities safely.
  • Remain calm and composed when unexpected challenges arise, staying quiet and confident and taking action to resolve situations safely.
Required Training & Experience
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of vulnerable people.
  • Experience of working in a caring role.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Good understanding of epilepsy or willingness to learn.
  • Good personable skills.
  • Understanding of Health & Safety issues.
