Job Overview

Self Employed Personal Assistant / PA Carer Support Worker – Cover/Bank Position. The role may suit somebody who has been a dog walker or worked in kennels, a veterinary nurse, or someone who has provided care in the community to various adult‑age ranges and abilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assisting with the care of the guide dog and the other pets, including help with walking, feeding and cleaning.
  • Assisting with the basic upkeep and tidying of the garden and outdoor areas.
  • Helping with all household tasks that require sighted assistance, which will include sewing, ironing, and putting away laundry. Cleaning and tidying within the house maintaining a habitable, safe environment.
  • Helping with preparing meals, including labeling food containers and organizing the same, such as to aid a blind person.
  • Providing sighted assistance with setting up and using various equipment and technology within the home and office.
  • Assistance with all written material, correspondence, and completing forms where necessary.
  • Guiding and giving verbal information to a blind person about the environment both indoors and out traveling.
  • Driving the client to and from events/venues, medical appointments, vet appointments, and shopping trips.
  • Assistance with correspondence and any other reading and writing tasks, which may be required to support a blind person e.g. reading information on food packaging, cleaning products, description of items and signage.
  • Assist with the care of animals and vet trips, as and when required.
  • Support to attend meetings and social events where necessary.
  • Any other task which may reasonably be asked of someone providing the services of a Personal Assistant.
Additional Information

PA support worker to assist a registered blind person to maintain their independence in and out of the home. Including assisting with the care of cats and dogs so you must be comfortable around many animals. The client works with some flexibility so you will be able to plan your own schedule around their support needs when appropriate.

Requirements
  • Contract to provide services as a Personal Assistant to a blind person, enabling independent living.
  • Very good verbal communication skills.
  • Officially registered as self‑employed with HMRC and responsible for reporting and paying own income tax and national insurance.
  • Living reasonably local to the work location.
  • Reliable, caring, respectful, non‑judgmental, friendly, calm, and with a good sense of humour.
  • Competent driver with a reliable car, use of SatNav. Mileage expenses will be paid (excluding commute). Must be able to drive to events, appointments, etc.
  • Comfortable around many animals, especially an array of dogs and cats.
  • Relevant liability insurance (proof required). Willing to obtain a DBS (or willing to undergo one at own cost). Must have ID and valid references.
  • Ideally experience in the care field working directly in people’s homes.
  • Resilient, observant and able to follow instructions.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, fluent in English, proven track record of being reliable and punctual, with a willingness to go the extra mile.
  • Ability to provide services at times requested, with reasonable notice; flexible approach required.
  • Training and guidance will be given; trust and total confidentiality with respect to all matters is essential.
