Job description
Job Title : Payroll Assistant

Location : Newport - Hybrid working (office based 3 days per week; Mondays & Fridays from home)

Salary : £26,000 – £32,000 per annum (depending on experience)

Hours : 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Contract Type : Full Time – Permanent

Payroll System : Sage 50 Payroll

We are seeking a skilled Payroll Assistant to join a supportive, long-standing payroll team within a professional services setting. The successful applicant will bring at least one year of payroll experience and be comfortable working with Sage 50 Payroll . In this role, you will help ensure payrolls are processed accurately, on time, and in accordance with current legislation. General office administration skills are essential, including managing email communication and using Microsoft Office programs such as Excel and Word. As this is a hybrid position, regular attendance in the office is required. We’re looking for someone detail-focused, proactive, and knowledgeable about payroll compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Keep employee payroll records up to date and accurately maintained.
  • Support the processing of weekly and monthly payroll cycles.
  • Prepare pension documentation and upload files to various pension providers.
  • Issue payroll-related documents, including payslips and P45s.
  • Complete RTI submissions to HMRC.
  • Produce payroll journals, reports, and other summary documents.
  • Handle queries from clients, employees, and HMRC in a professional manner.
  • Ensure all payroll activities adhere to current legislation and internal standards.
  • Provide general administrative support to the wider payroll team as needed.
Skills and Qualifications
  • At least 1 year’s payroll experience with a strong understanding of payroll rules and compliance.
  • A minimum of 1 year’s hands‑on experience using Sage 50 Payroll, demonstrating accuracy and reliability.
  • Solid office experience, including managing email correspondence and using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail when managing payroll information.
  • Clear and confident communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • A professional, positive approach and willingness to continue developing payroll knowledge.
