Job description
Out-of-Hours Veterinary Surgeon – Tier 3 Hospital | North West England

Exceptional work–life balance – a highly sought-after 7 nights on, 7 nights off rota gives ample time to rest, recharge, and plan life outside of work. Work in a state-of-the-art Tier 3 hospital – access to advanced diagnostics and equipment including CT, MRI, laparoscopy and a CO₂ laser, supporting gold-standard ECC care. Outstanding earning and benefits package – excellent salary up to £85,000 DOE, generous CPD allowance, paid professional fees, and enhanced family‑friendly benefits. Supportive, skilled overnight team – work alongside experienced RVNs with strong referral support, fostering a collaborative and confident OOH environment. Prime location with lifestyle appeal – close to Liverpool and Manchester with easy airport access, plus proximity to the beautiful countryside of Wales and the Lake District.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Veterinary Surgeon to join a large, supportive Out-of-Hours team within a well-established and progressive veterinary practice in the North West.

With local branches across the region, this respected practice has proudly served its community since 1961. In 2007, it expanded further with the opening of its purpose‑built Veterinary Hospital – a Tier 3, RCVS‑accredited training hospital offering 24‑hour emergency care alongside comprehensive first‑opinion and referral services.

About the Practice

The hospital is exceptionally well equipped, providing an outstanding clinical environment that supports high standards of patient care and professional development. Facilities include:

  • Digital X-ray and ultrasound
  • Multiple scopes and dental radiography
  • CO₂ laser and laparoscopic equipment
  • 64‑slice CT scanner
  • 1.5T MRI scanner

Ideally located close to Liverpool and Manchester, the practice benefits from excellent transport and airport links, while also being within easy reach of the stunning countryside of Wales and the Lake District – offering an enviable work–life balance.

About the Role

The practice is seeking an experienced Veterinary Surgeon with a passion for Emergency and Critical Care to join the dedicated Out-of-Hours team. The successful candidate will be:

  • Highly client‑and patient‑focused, with a commitment to working up cases to a high clinical standard
  • Surgically confident, able to perform common procedures encountered in an OOH setting
  • Comfortable monitoring hospitalised inpatients, ideally with prior experience

This role offers the opportunity to work alongside a skilled overnight team of two Registered Veterinary Nurses. Individual development is actively encouraged, with many vets currently studying for, or having completed, additional certificates. Further qualifications in ECC are welcomed and highly valued.

Rota
  • A well‑balanced 7 nights on, 7 nights off rota
  • Shifts run from 8:30pm to 8:30am

The Out-of-Hours service covers the practice’s own 10 sites, as well as a further 6 external veterinary practices, with excellent collaboration between the emergency and referral teams.

Benefits

The role offers a highly competitive package, including:

  • Up to £85,000 salary (dependent on experience)
  • 6.6 weeks’ annual leave inclusive of bank holidays (23 shifts per annum)
  • £1,750 CPD allowance
  • VDS, RCVS and BSAVA/BVA fees fully paid
  • Generous staff pet discount scheme
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption pay
  • Optional private medical insurance and Healthshield

This is a fantastic opportunity for an ECC‑focused Veterinary Surgeon to thrive within a forward‑thinking, well‑resourced hospital that genuinely values its people and their progression.
