Job description

A Medical Oncology advanced training position is available at the Launceston General Hospital, Launceston, Tasmania, in 2026. This position is accredited by the RACP for 12 months of medical oncology core training and is supported by a team of 6.4 FTE consultant medical oncologists, 1 BPT ward registrar and 2 residents.

Work involves the following duties:

1. Assessment and management of ambulant medical oncology patients requiring treatment within the WP Holman Clinic outpatient facility, Launceston General Hospital.

2. Advising, mentoring and overseeing the work of junior medical staff assigned to the care of inpatient medical oncology patients at the Launceston General Hospital including participation in the on-call roster with Consultant Support.

The Northern Cancer Service provides comprehensive cancer care to the population of Northern/North West Tasmania (250,000 people). Treatment centres are located at the WP Holman Clinic, Launceston General Hospital, North West Regional Cancer Centre, Burnie, and the Mersey Community Hospital.

The oncology service at the Launceston General Hospital (where the advanced trainee position is based) provides an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment. Using start of the art technology, the service combines the disciplines of medical and radiation oncology, as well as haematology and palliative care on one site.

The Northern Cancer Service will provide the successful applicant with a quality, clinical, educational and developmental experience. An extensive range of diagnostic and imaging services, including CT, MRI and PET, are available in Launceston.

Formal oncology MDT meetings are conducted in the areas of urology, gastroenterology, breast, lung, head and neck, as well as state-wide neurosurgery and gynae-oncology meetings.

The Launceston General Hospital is a major training site for the University of Tasmania Clinical School. Teaching and research is encouraged and attendance at national and international oncology meetings, as well as training and educational events, will be supported.

There is an on-call requirement for advanced trainees which equates to a 1 in 4 rotation based in Launceston. This is for medical oncology patients and supported by a consultant.

Launceston offers a fabulous regional lifestyle with excellent public and private schools, recreational and sporting facilities, shopping, entertainment and cultural pursuits. Country or city living is available within minutes of the hospital and there is easy access to Melbourne.
