Occupational Therapists (OT) Autism Assessors (ADOS trained)

We are recruiting ADOS assessors from the following professional backgrounds:

  • Occupational Therapists (OT)
  • Speech and Language Therapists (SALT)
  • Psychologists (Clinical, Counselling or Forensic)
  • Registered Nurses (Mental Health or Learning Disability)

You must be HCPC or NMC registered and formally trained and experienced in ADOS or ADI-R.

Main duties of the job
Role Overview

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside Paediatricians, Psychiatrists and Psychologists, you will:

  • Conduct face-to-face ADOS-2 assessments using the appropriate module for the childs age and ability
  • Record detailed behavioural observations
  • Contribute findings to the MDT diagnostic discussion
  • Support the consultant clinician in providing same-day feedback to families
  • Add a concise written summary of your ADOS findings to contribute to the diagnostic report (issued within six weeks)
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and uphold safeguarding standards throughout

Each assessment is fully inclusive of observation, scoring, MDT discussion, reporting and feedback. Clinics are typically scheduled for four assessments per day.

Job responsibilities

Undertake occupational therapy assessments as part of a multidisciplinary autism diagnostic pathway (e.g. ADOS-2, ADI-R, sensory profiles, functional assessments).

Work collaboratively with psychologists, speech and language therapists, psychiatrists, and other professionals in diagnostic decision-making.

Provide detailed written reports, including functional and sensory needs, to inform diagnosis and recommendations.

Support development of care plans, signposting, and onward referrals post-diagnosis.

Maintain accurate, contemporaneous records in line with professional standards and service policies.

Contribute to safeguarding processes, risk assessments, and duty of candour requirements.

Person Specification
Experience
  • Experience of working with autistic individuals (children, young people, or adults).
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working.
  • Previous involvement in diagnostic assessments (desirable).
  • Experience of report writing for clinical or statutory purposes.
Knowledge and skills
  • Understanding of autism spectrum conditions, neurodiversity, and co-occurring conditions (e.g. ADHD, learning disability, mental health).
  • Knowledge of standardised assessment tools relevant to OT and autism.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with families and carers sensitively and collaboratively.
  • Good organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload.
  • IT literacy for electronic health record and reporting systems.
Qualifications
  • Degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy.
  • Current HCPC registration.
  • Evidence of post-graduate training relevant to autism assessment (e.g. ADOS-2, ADI-R, sensory integration desirable).
