Role

Nurse / Midwife Practitioner - 22.5 hours

Location: BPAS Birmingham South – The Robert Clinic, 162 Station Rd, King's Norton, Birmingham B30 1DB

Hours: 22.5 hours per week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). A detailed shift pattern and salary information are in the Further Information section below.

Salary: £38,219 - £44,625 per annum (pro rata for 22.5 hours) – depending on skills and experience

About the role

As a Nurse or Midwife Practitioner you will provide high quality clinical care to BPAS clients across a range of reproductive healthcare services including termination of pregnancy, STI testing & treatment, contraception & vasectomy. You will be involved in all stages of the client pathway from consultation through to treatment and will work in all areas of the unit including theatre and recovery. This role involves providing treatment and clinical information to clients in person and over the phone.

About You

You will be a Registered Adult Nurse Level 1 or Midwife with active NMC registration and PIN. You will have at least 12 months of clinical practice and a keen interest in sexual health and reproductive healthcare. Clinical knowledge and experience of safeguarding and Fraser/Gillick competencies are essential.

With excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills you will be able to care for clients in a compassionate and empathetic way. You should be comfortable using IT and Microsoft packages including Outlook, Word and Microsoft Teams.

Main duties of the job
  • Work in accordance with NMC guidelines for Professional Practice and the wider regulatory frameworks of the Abortion Act 1967 and Health & Social Care Act, as well as BPAS clinical policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that the client understands her options in relation to the pregnancy and, if choosing termination, meets the grounds of the Abortion Act.
  • Provide information on STI testing, undertake tests, provide results and discuss, inform and confirm the client’s future choice of contraception.
  • Check for and implement any procedures indicated on client case notes, including administering medication for Medical Abortion procedures or cervical preparation.
  • Carry out post-treatment check-ups by assessing the physical condition of the client and discussing any concerns.
  • Complete relevant paperwork and, in the event of post-treatment problems, make arrangements with the clinic or refer to an NHS agency if necessary.
  • Care for and support clients undergoing surgical treatments, which could include general anaesthetic, conscious sedation or local anaesthetic.

We are also looking for:

  • Sound and accurate administrative competence with attention to detail
  • Gynecological nursing experience or relevant specialty (sexual health, contraception)
  • Venepuncture / cannulation skills

Shift pattern: 22.5 hours per week

  • Tuesday & Wednesday – 08:00 to 16:00
  • Thursday – 7.5 hour flexible shift between 08:00 and 18:00

Experience
  • Minimum 12 months clinical practice experience.
  • Experience of general nursing or midwifery.
  • Experience completing client documentation and working within guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety, COSHH requirements and infection control.
  • Gynaecological nursing experience or relevant specialty (sexual health, contraception).
Qualifications
  • Registered Adult Nurse level 1 or Registered Midwife (practising)
  • Active NMC registration and valid PIN
  • Ultrasound scanning skills
