Multiskilled Maintenance Engineer is responsible for the first level escalation of breakdowns within the factory. Working as part of the shift engineering team ensuring breakdowns are fixed promptly in line with priorities. The breakdowns include mechanical, electrical and controls. The engineer is also responsible for the completion of preventative works orders.
Responsibilities
- Ensure Site PPE policy and LOTO procedures are followed.
- Ensure the safe working of engineering functions (particularly in areas of isolation and safe entry).
- Provide safety walk information to Operations Team using the existing in‑house reporting system.
- Maintain a safe environment by ensuring all company and legal requirements are met, safety equipment is properly maintained and checked, and safe working practices are promoted with all checks and job sign‑offs completed.
- Ensure all Quality Management Systems are adhered to and properly documented.
- Ensure Engineering GMP targets are achieved with standards understood and adhered to by all team members.
- Apply food‑safety legislation, including HACCP, so that the team’s outputs meet these standards.
- Ensure all documentation is completed, filed and available for internal and external auditors.
- Collaborate with Production and Quality teams to improve and develop operating practices that enhance product quality and customer service.
- Ensure full compliance with company Quality, Food Safety, Health & Safety and Environmental requirements.
- Assist with the integration of new equipment with the manufacturing, operations and project teams.
- Attend daily engineering meetings and contribute to safety, quality and operational KPIs.
- Cover senior shift engineers in DDS meetings in collaboration with operations and quality teams.
- Record all work in the CMMS, ensuring correct parts are booked out as appropriate.
- Execute planned maintenance activities with the engineering team leader.
- Ensure correct spare parts are available and coordinate with stores personnel when required.
- Report shift issues (written) and ensure successful information transfer to the on‑coming shift’s senior engineer.
- Control contractors, ensuring compliance with risk assessments, LOTO procedures and permit procedures.
- Complete PPM schedules and work orders within agreed time frames, closing out breakdowns where necessary and advising on required parts.
- Verify that equipment is serviceable and runs as expected after maintenance, ready for production.
- Maintain a minimum of NVQ Level 3 (UK) in electrical or mechanical engineering (or equivalent).
Qualifications
- Solid experience in a high‑volume manufacturing environment, preferably in the food or consumer products industry.
- Strong general electrical and/or mechanical engineering skills and knowledge.
- Experience in fault finding.
- Awareness of HACCP, PUWER, LOLER and COSHH.
- Effective team player who can work independently and highlight continuous improvement opportunities.
- Proficient PC skills, including use of the Office 365 suite.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate with suppliers and internal customers.
- Accurate interpretation of schematic diagrams.
- Logical thinker and problem‑solving ability.
- Energy and drive to 'get things done'.
- Organised methodology and ability to plan to a specified time scale.
