Job description

The post holder will work as part of a team as an autonomous practitioner providing holistic, high‑quality woman‑centred midwifery care to women and their families in a range of settings both within hospital and community (including home birth). Expert care will be provided to women and their families throughout pregnancy, labour, the postnatal period. This may be part of a rotational, integrated or continuity‑of‑carer team as service need dictates.

Responsibilities
  • Promote and uphold a professional image at all times and act in a professional manner in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) regulations.
  • Provide safe, effective, high‑quality midwifery care standards at all times covering a 24/7 rota, including night, weekend and on‑call duties supporting both hospital and community settings.
  • Work effectively in a multi‑disciplinary team and communicate clearly with all team members to ensure appropriate, safe care is delivered.
  • Role‑model compassionate and inclusive leadership, demonstrating a consistent style that engages, enables and empowers others and facilitates collaborative working within teams, departments and across organisational boundaries.
  • Achieve the highest possible standard of care ensuring resources are utilised effectively and efficiently.
Qualifications
  • 1st Level live NMC Registered Midwife.
  • Mentorship qualification or a relevant equivalent qualification (essential requirement or must be gained within 12 months of appointment).
  • Diploma or degree in midwifery.
  • Demonstrable and recent relevant experience of working in community or hospital or birth centre setting (for Band 6).
  • Professional and clinical knowledge acquired through midwifery training to degree/diploma level plus ongoing preceptorship.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development in accordance with NMC standards for re‑validation.
  • Recent experience and required level of competencies to meet the requirements of a Band 6 position.
  • Thorough understanding of contemporary midwifery issues.
  • Evidence of change management in ward/department area (for Band 6).
  • Commitment to completing Band 5 competency framework.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage a ward/department area in the absence of a Ward Manager/Senior Midwife (Band 6).
  • Counselling and appraisal skills (Band 6).
  • Practical skills: NLS, BLS, water birth, phlebotomy, episiotomy, suturing and IV cannulation (Band 6).
  • Up to date with Level 3 safeguarding training requirements.
Desirable
  • Leadership course (Band 6).
  • Management course (Band 6).
  • Examination of newborn babies or working towards NIPE.
  • Basic understanding of risk and governance processes.
  • Basic understanding of financial management.
  • Evidence of innovation in practice.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Basic IT skills.
