Grade: AfC Band 3.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic and reliable Medical Technical Officer to join an existing, highly experienced, multi-disciplinary team.

The successful applicant will be based in the Antimicrobial Reference Laboratory at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, which is recognised as a centre of excellence for both R&D and specialist service provision in the area of antimicrobial chemotherapy.

The post-holder will work primarily on supporting more senior staff, assisting in the day to day work of the specialist assay service provided by the Antimicrobial Reference Laboratory.

Both laboratory work and clerical work will be undertaken including sample analysis, result communication by telephone and computer data entry . We will offer full training, encouragement and support.

The successful applicant is likely to have a science background and preferably experience of working in a laboratory

Job responsibilities

Working as part of a team and under the direction of more senior staff, to assist in the day to day work of the specialist assay service provided by the Antimicrobial Reference Laboratory.

To undertake routine maintenance and diagnostic checks on specialist equipment. To assistant in the procurement, provision and management of laboratory supplies. The specific duties carried out will depend on the allocated area of work.

To participate in the preparation and processing of clinical specimens for antibiotic assay and under supervision, to communicate results back to the users of the Antimicrobial Reference Laboratory.

To undertake data entry and associated clerical duties, including phoning results to service users.

Education/Training/Qualifications
  • NVQ level 3 or A levels in science or related subjects
Work Experience
  • Experience of working in a team
  • Working knowledge of lab procedures, processing of samples, SOPs and H&S, computer systems and Data Entry
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Good interpersonal skills, communication skills both verbal and written and organisation skills and team working, ability to concentrate
  • Key board skills and accurate data entry skills

  • Experience of handling pathology specimens
